It's so hard to say isn't it?  I always try and have something heavy-ish in the center of the table to hold it all down. But I have an extra wide table so that makes it easier. You could also sew a pocket along the edges of a tablecloth and use drapery weights all around. Of course nothing is going to hold it for a determined child but it might help with the shifting.

I was thinking about that too. It's worth trying.
We don't use a tablecloth all the time --usually just with dinner. I like how it sets the tone and sends the message that this time is special. I have a wood table and keep a seasonal runner in the center and use various colored tablecloths depending on the season or feast day. I recently ordered these tablecloths that Sharyn recommended in the dinnerware thread. I like them a lot. They resist stains and come out of the dryer wrinkle free. And I love having a tablecloth for the feasts of the liturgical year! I hang them all in my laundry room on hangers when not in use --which looks really nice.

They probably do make 35 lb. sinkers but then you'd have to find a way to keep them from swinging on them!!

Ditto. The machine is always running -- so what's one more item? And unlike others, I find washing a tablecloth easier than wiping down the table.

The one time we did this, that is just what we did - cut the plastic to the size/shape of the table. It worked great as far as our situation went. If it had hung, it still would have been pulled off, so it was better this way. |

That sounds more "trim." I think that one thing my dh doesn't like about his parents' table is the plastic is a couple of inches longer than the table cloth all the way around and bunches around your legs.

I've thought of this solution! It sounds nice, I've just always been afraid of a stray toddler coming and pulling the whole thing off. Would that happen?

I do the tablecloth/runner with the vinyl overtop, and I actually will take the extra pieces and clip them under the table, to keep it in the right place. It's not perfect, but keeps it from shifting too much. I almost feel like the table needs a shower cap-type of covering, that has the elastic!

Never happened to us. The glass was way too heavy (about 1/3 inch thick) for a toddler to pull it.

Our table has a nice wooden top so I normally just dress it up with a centerpiece and runner. Tableclothes are used for major feasts.

I actually do this for messy craft projects! I layer the table with newspaper and then stick an old fitted bedsheet over it.
The bedsheet actually works really well at not coming off when a toddler pulls on it and keeping the newspaper in place.

Bumping this up to say that this is a great time of year to buy liturgical colored tablecloths.
I found gold, red and green damask tablecloths at K-mart discounted down to $5! Online they're a bit more but you can see what they look like and what the sizes are.
Damask is a typically liturgical print so it's quite a nice connection. They had all sorts of sizes (same price) and since I already have a gold damask tablecloth I am going to use the one I bought for making napkins and a table runner. Used with my white tablecloth on feast days it should be quite lovely!
I think I'm going to go back and get a few more for my daughter-in-law and to save for other sewing projects.

We've recently made our own - out of a beautiful 100% cotton in all the liturgical colors. They are SO lovely and my only disappointment is that I didn't make them myself sooner :)
It's so nice to be all prepared for the liturgical changes (even daily) with a beautiful tablecloth. Many time our prayer table just isn't changed for daily colors, but the kitchen table is easier (just change it when we clear the dishes).
