Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I wasn't sure where to put this, so please move as needed.

Does anybody use Netflix to supplement subjects with movies? I'm thinking of things like documentaries, lives of Saints, and other educational type moves. It would cost a fortune to purchase these, and sometimes the local library does not carry some of the more religious items.

I just wasn't sure if this was a good investment of $8.99 a month. I guess I need to take the time and see which films I'm interested in and then compare to the library's offerings first.

I use Netflix in our learning ALL.THE.TIME!!!!!!!!!

Nature documentaries
History documentaries
Civics lessons
Historical fiction
Art Appreciation
Museum tours - have a great tour of inside the Vatican in my queue right now!
How-to
Catholic/Liturgical Year - Ellie posted this great list of Catholic movies available on Netflix
Sports stories/movies - personal favs here
Engineering & Science
Early Education - the Leapfrog DVD's are here

I preview almost everything before I show to our children.

And...let's not forget that MOST USEFUL Netflix feature...the romantic comedy/date night movie that I watch with my sweet and a nice glass of Chardonnay!

So....a BIG YES here!!! It's worth the monthly fee for our family!!! Plus, you can't beat the DVD landing in your mailbox!!!! How great is that?

We LOVE Netflix. We don't ALWAYS subscribe....b/c my girls are a bit young....but I'm imagining in a year or two, we'll be "Netflixing" a lot more for lots of things for many different subjects/topics!!! I LOVE movies!

Also, it would depend on what you can get at your local library. We can get just about anything, so depending on how much I need the convenience-factor of Netflix at the time would influence if we subscribe or not.

knowloveserve just posted this thread, that you may find helpful:
Catholic Movies available on Netflix

And, here are some from the archives, focusing on Catholicism:
::Movies with a Catholic Slant
::Good Catholic Movies
::Contemporary Films with Catholic Themes
::Foreign Films with Catholic Themes
::Classic Films with Catholic Spirituality

Ohter movie links to give you an idea of how you can find what's out there:

American History Through DVD
Love2Learn at the Movies
Teach With Movies

We just started using it and LOVE it. We've seen some Magic School Bus series, documentaries, catholic movies to celebrate feast days, and I look forward to much more!

Or....Chardonnay Option #2......the romantic comedy while hubby is outta town, curled up with laptop, researching steam mops, waffle irons, and family games, reading narration posts, and compiling movie and book threads/resources!

We've been using Netflix for about a year now. My dh has always been the one to make selections for our "quiet time, kids are in bed, lets have some icecream night" . But I have to admit after reading some of these threads I'm searching for dvds that will complement our learning this school year. It makes me giddy to think of the possibilities. Thanks for the great suggestions

Shouldn't there be a sticky for all these wonderful Netflix suggestions? Of course, that might make my wait time a little longer...

Wow, thank you for all the links. I had not idea Netflix was so valuable. Sorry, I should've checked the archive first.

Since we only have free TV (no cable or sat), this might be a good option for us.

Thanks so much!

Cava or champagne or dry white wine is our usual thing. It does tend to be for date night with us right now as I'm finding our library has quite a bit...but I'll be adding more educational as the year goes.

Are Mike Venezia's DVDs available? our library only has one.

Hey...are you peeking in over here???

And of course...there's option #3 when dh is outta town....you could be sitting on the couch sipping Chardonnay WITH ME!!!!!! Then...we would REALLY get in trouble with these laptops!!!

Yes, there should !!!!! I've been working on it for awhile ...I keep getting sidetracked by exciting things like steam-mops and How to disassemble a glue-bound workbook .   It's practically done....which is how I was able to just POP them in there like that!

No. And believe me, I've hunted. Utterly displeased with the level of organization I can maintain in my QUEUE, I have done everything short of contacting their billing department to convince someone that they need to design a simple database that allows for more organization by genre, and allows a user to designate a date for zinging (official Netflix term) a DVD to the top of your queue. Can you imagine how UTTERLY DELICIOUS that would be??? If the week before May 22, Netflix automatically zinged Saint Rita to the top of your queue.    Of course, I suppose then they'd run into too many people requesting thematic/seasonal movies all at once, but still, it'd be nice with school themes as well! Enough whining and preaching to the choir.

Yes we use it and I think it's a **GREAT** investment...unless you end up keeping the movie for 2 MONTHS like I recently did! We fortunately also have a very handy library w/ a ton of educational dvds too.

And, have you all used their Netflix instant view for the Wii? You can watch from their instant watch movies and shows through the Wii. It's awesome. We just LOVE it.

YES!! We love it! Before we had to hook up our laptop to the TV to be able to stream to the TV. Now it is so much easier.

An old thread on Watch Instantly
