I think that mine throw every pillow, cushion, blanket, and book within reach into the floor JUST so they can walk on top of them. It happens SO FAST. Like, I fold the same throw 3 times in a half hour and somehow it is on the floor again.
And yes, boys will also step on the baskets. Fortunately, my Peterboro ones have survived so far (though, the clear lid on one doesn't sit right anymore because it got squished down INTO the basket). But, I've had other cheaper baskets used for toys and things with feet pushed through the bottom (yes, somehow, they ended up empty and upside down and THEN stepped on).

Jen, what kind of Peterboro baskets are the ones on the table? The ones with a lower front? I couldn't find them on the site, but a name would help. |

They stopped making them after I bought them. I only buy from their Tent Sale stuff...and I guess those are usually styles they are discontinuing? Anyway, the reason you can't find them is because they aren't there any more. I *think* those were originally intended to be kitchen counter baskets...I had the lady at Peterboro pull practically every Tent Sale basket they had (at the time) off the line and stack phone books standing upright in every basket until we found one that would be stable enough to hold a big collection of books. She probably thought I was crazy!!! >> "Now, are the phone books standing upright? Can you see their spines? Is the basket tipping? Can you take all but one phone book out of the basket to see if the basket falls over? << She was very kind and did everything I asked and more to help me find something that would meet my needs!!!
I do like those baskets with the low fronts though, and I'm glad I nabbed them! They're super. But, for the low front baskets I lose the nice handles (like the ones pictured in Suzanne's post). The size of both the baskets is basically the same - it's a nice sturdy square base of about 13". I have both styles and like them a lot. For portability - I prefer the basket with handles. This is what my little fella is using. For accessibility - I like the low front baskets. My older kids use the low front baskets because they remain stationary on their table. I like the baskets with handles because they're so portable - yet, fold the handles down and they are nice and stable like the other baskets!!
I really like the cardstock pocket idea (attached to the inside of the basket)! I'm going to work on something like that today with some old file folders I have in neat prints. I'm going to cut a portion of an old file folder to size, and then run it through my laminator. Then, I'm going to further reinforce the top sides of the open pocket with book repair tape. Perfect idea! Thanks for sharing, Suzanne!

I forgot that I used to do that until my kids started. Of course, I wasn't interest in privacy. I just wanted to read in peace.

I love the way the baskets look but I have found we need something studier so we're going to do wood crates this year (this design but my son is making them for me). With lids they are stackable and the hand holes are good for carrying.

Great idea Michelle, I love wooden crates. I have two sitting on a coffee table under the window in our library. They hold some of our picture books. Love them! Your picture is lovely, is your son going to make lids too?

Yes but it turns out I may have to wait a bit. He's has a lot of custom work he has to finish right now (he's a cabinetmaker by trade) so my project is a ways down in the queue.
I went with some large plastic crates from JoAnn's (50% this week) in the meantime. They are pretty sturdy, stack nicely and will do for now.

I've found good wooden crates (similar to what MicheleQ linkded) at Sam's or Costco......the kind that the bottles of wine come in. They have nice handles in the side of them. Sometimes they'll give them to me, sometimes not. They're very sturdy!

Thanks everyone for all your ideas! Jen, those file holders are quite interesting. It looks like there is a sort of storage hole at the bottom...is that right? We've used magazine organizers since the beginning and they have been great; but, now that they are getting older there is just too much to contain in it. Also they are always losing their pencils or someone will take someone else's. So, I want to have something for their supplies as well.

Jackie, if you're low on funds you can often find wider cardboard slant front boxes at many stores...for free...during back-to-school sales of school supplies. Look for empty boxes from file folders, pocket folders, spiral notebooks, etc. and simply ask the store if they throw them away...they're usually glad to have you take them. Our local Dollar Tree had decorated ones, that matched decorative file folders they were selling...they're a neutral tan pattern, that complements floral file folders they carried at the time (which I had already purchased)...I am so thankful for such a nice FREE addition to our homeschool storage. I reinforced the inside corners, where there were tabs that might loosen, with some tan duct tape we already had. A cup fits nicely inside, in the corner where smaller books reside. A pencil box would work just as nicely and the contents wouldn't spill if it gets jostled when books are placed in and out. It's so nice to have something that cost nothing and is still pretty and useful.

Jackie,
We have been living in close quarters for three years now so I had to come up with some solutions. Thought I'd share in case it helps.
On the top shelf of our entertainment unit, next to the dining room table where we work, sits these holders. One holds lead pencils, and the rest of the rectangle holder holds erasers and pencil sharpeners. The other round holder has pens.
This carry all (not sure of its original purpose) has the general use coloured pencils. We use tin cans for each colour.
On the bottom shelf sits lesser used items but still often needed. So an old wooden pencil holder works better with tins or everything become a jumble for us.
This old gardening caddy has sticky tape, rulers, stapler, glue, hole puncher, scissors etc.

They each have a desk. They are these folding tables from Walmart. They each have a basket, plastic from Walmart for books. They each have a plastic pencil/pen case. They each have a light at their desk. Probably not as pretty as some, but in the budget.

Sorry I'm only just getting a chance to answer your question, Jackie!
Yes. There is a square opening at the back of the file holder - I measured and it's 3 1/2" x 4 1/2".

AH! I can't believe I forgot about this --I think I posted it here a while back even (yep, here it is) and I have it printed out and sitting in my sewing room!
THANK YOU for the reminder.
Guess what I am doing this weekend!

Oh that's a great link to the crate cover's. They look awesome. I have covered banker boxes and have a tutorial up on my blog about how to do that. I like them, not for school supplies though, just for kid storage. Here is the tutorial.
