We were HUGE Hailey Mills fans, so I'm not sure how we missed this one, but I put it on my Netflix, and it came today, and so I'm just about to "preview" it while I fold my laundry and dh has taken the boys to run errands.

OH MY GOODNESS! We were Haley Mills fans, too. I just introduced "Summer Magic" to my sons last week.
How DID you miss this one? You will love, love, love it. It might be a little old for your sons.

Okay, so I showered first, and had an idea.
For science, you could also use Montessori three part cards. You could put them in a plastic binder zipper bag, but that wouldn't help you with your whole "checking their work" thing which seems to be working for you. But, it occurred to me that you could print out the pdfs for those things and have part of the assignment be the child cutting them apart and gluing them into place.

It was my DAD who turned us into Hailey Mills fans! She was his childhood crush
LOVE Summer Magic and sing the songs to my kids all the time.
Pushing play now

Well, everything doesn't have to be checkable work!
And I've thought of putting in ziploc bags full of fun things. I've thought of cards out of Usborne sets: 50 Things to Make and Do, cards on the night sky, etc. It would be fun to put one in as a surprise for a Friday or something.
I don't really know anything about Montessori 3-part cards. Tell me more, tell me more!

I would love more detailed ideas for notebooking/binderizing science -- as you say, it's the "already done" and "easily do-able" that catches my eye at this stage.
By the way, I notice that there's a Science Wizardry book, too. I've never seen it up close and personal -- has anyone else seen/used it? |

Donna Young does have some science lab sheets. I'm on the lookout for ideas like Lindsay mentioned, geared for younger age. Lab sheet for experiment that is younger, and also a weather journal format for recording daily observations. Any ideas?
I have the older versions of Science Wizardy and Gardening Wizardry (and Math Wizardry). (Used book sales are so wonderful. )
The old version of Science Wizardry is made up of many experiments, grouped in different categories. The categories are not formally written (not groups like Earth Science, etc.). The experiments in the group seem to build on each other.
I was just looking through the weather section and really like how it was organized. By the end I think you would have your own self-made weather station, but in understanding the reason for each section. It works in steps so we're understanding heat and cold, temperature, then rain, understanding rain drops, clouds, then making rain gauge. Next would be rain, snow, crystals. Then understanding wind, build a wind vane, measure the wind (anemometer), etc.
Gardening Wizardry is more focus on gardening, containing
::History and Folklore of Common Fruits and Vegetables
::fun with Kitchen Fruits and Vegetables
::indoor plant growing experiments
::raising earthwords, pill bugs and snails
::Herbs
::plant craft projects

There's a really great weather unit at Mater Amabilis with a weather chart that's very simple and easy to use.

Oh, thanks for that reminder. I'm so far behind all of you on my planning that I haven't read through all through my inspirational sources yet, let alone putting it down on paper in plan format.

I'm not sold on Montessori 3-part cards. I get anxious thinking of all the cutting and organizing. It's messy to me...too much paperwork. It's hard to keep them organized. Just my two cents.

re 3-part cards: Ah! I tend to get turned off by fiddly things. But maybe I'll read a bit more about them.
re the Wizardry books: hm, I have so many science-experiment books already, all under-utilized. Still, I love the way that series goes at concepts (the math one, anyway).
re weather journaling: Donna Young has some nice mini-book-sized journal forms, with room for the date, the season, the time and temperature, illustrations, and comments. We've used them some, and they're one thing I've got in mind to put in these binders. She also has garden ones and nature ones. My thought is to do the weather journal not daily, but a couple of days a week, hopefully over the entire year, then have a mini-book to staple together and keep in the big binder at the end. I also want to make a "birds/fish/mammals book," or else a seies of tiny pamphlets, probably using her forms, as we loosely follow the CHC science sequence.
I'll have to look at the MA files -- I tend to forget all about them, too, and there are always so many good ideas.
Sally
