Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

books or anyone who has done core 2 in sonlight - i have heard that the read alouds are not all that great. so, i'm thinking of just using MA's literature suggestions. anyone have any feedback on sonlight core 2's read alouds?

Hmmmmmmmmm...I got out my catalogue to look for you. I like the Aesop book, and I think it would work nicely with MA narrations.

Castle Diary is nice if you are going to be covering the middle ages...otherwise, I'd save it for when you do that time period.

I intensely dislike the version of A Child's Garden of Verses that they use. The oversized Tasha Tudor illustrated one is more expensive, but my girls will actually read it because its so beautiful.

I personally wouldn't read Cricket in Times Square with a child under 9.

I saved Door in the Wall and the Apprentice as readers for slightly older children.

Ginger Pye...its very slow. It doesn't get good till the end. We liked it but its not very popular with many people. Also, be forewarned, the chapters are looooooooooonnnnnnnnnnngggggg!

I haven't read Kildee House.

When I did core 2 last, I had a boy who wouldn't hear of reading A Little Princess.

We used The Little Riders as a reader for about 3rd-4th grade reading level.

Red Sails to Capri is a fabulous book...our favorite from the entire year. Two thumbs up, as they say.

The School Story was a *huge* hit as a reader for both my 6th and 3rd graders, who now fight over re-reading rights.

Strawberry Girl is loooooooonnnnnnnnnng, boring, and I admit, we never finished it.

I haven't read this particular version of Robin Hood.

The Twenty One Balloons we also saved for a reader with an older child.

White Stallion of Lippiza is beautifully illustrated but so far, neither of my older two care for the story very much.

Hope this helps!

I agree with Books' assessment with one exception: all of my boys have loved the audio version of A Little Princess , followed quickly by Little Lord Fauntleroy . I just went to the Sonlight site to doublecheck the readers list and I can't believe how expensive it's gotten !

thank you! books, your very thorough review is similar to what i have heard from a girlfriend who is finishing core1/2. her son's taste in reading is not always the same as my children's and so i wanted another opinion or two. elizabeth, the booklist gets longer and longer and more expensive every year.    i already have the little princess (i try to buy the books on the booklist when i see them at yardsales, etc) so i'm going to give it a go. now, i need to print out your review and compare it to MA's literature and see what's left. books sure do add up! at least, though, it's less than some of the catholic school tuitions. the elementary school where my dh went to is now 12K a year.

elizabeth, i'm wondering what you will be using with your children if you don't mind sharing?

books, the american history text is free online.

I also have it in a pdf file that I would like to offer free to anyone who wants it.

UPDATE:

It's already available for free in a nicely formatted pdf file:

God bless!

fyi: i bought a copy of the text on ebay and am looking forward to getting it this week. i figured it would cost me more than $30 to print out all of those pages (printer ink is expensive!) and then not be nearly as sturdy as a bound book.

One thing to that's good with a downloadable copy is htat you can take the disk to Kinkos, Staples, or Office Depot (or whatever print shop you've got nearby) and they'll print it anyway you want -- much cheaper than printing at home and you can get it spiral bound or whatever.....

Just my $.02.

I am interested in knowing more about this text. Has anyone compared it with Sonlight's recommended text for american history- Landmark's History of the United States? I have heard many say Landmark is hard to use esp for the first half of the year and this seems to use appealingly simple language...

I may do the printing at kinkos just to have it on hand if people feel it is valuable for history of the US.

Also, dh feels it would still be cheaper to buy the book for $30. Has anyone printed this at kinkos or somesuch and do you remember about what it cost?

FYI, you can buy the book for $19.95 at Yesterday's Classics

God bless!
