Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

In addition to having our highest priorities scheduled at hours that don't conflict with socializing, we also have independent work checklists. For example, my 14yo gets up early to do his most important work, then if a friend calls spontaneously and asks if ds can go to the pool, I ask, "Did you get your morning work done? Can you get your independent work done later?" 9 out of 10 times the answer is "yes" so he can go. Also, we pre-arrange social opportunities at our home at times that are convenient for us.

We highly value friendships! I see it as my job to find ways to say "yes" to social opportunities, especially as my children grow older and continue to home educate. With my older children, they understand that they need to be responsible for certain daily/weekly tasks and then they get to play. I need to set up our physical surroundings and time management in a way that supports them and all of their needs. We all need to work together to get it done. I guess you could say we're always striving to improve this dance    .

Love,

My only idea so far is to limit summer school time to mornings only and let her know she can play in the afternoons.

Becky,

This is pretty much what we do, just a limited number of subjects done for us usually in the afternoon (when it is the hottest and no one wants to be outside) or while commuting.

I've come up with a year round plan for our family, but I'm wondering if you think it would work. Perhaps you can anticipate something that I can't, as up to now we have followed the school terms. Here in Australia we are exactly in the middle of our school year.

So I'm thinking of having a 38 week school year with one week off every month except in Dec. and Jan. when we will have 4 weeks off in total. The only difficulty I can see is that my youngest son is still at school, and will be home for 4 of the weeks (being one week at a time)that we will be working. For those times I plan on simply doing the basics which should only take us 2 hours at most.

Have any of you tried year round with one still in school?

Thanks,
Tricia.
