and here I totally forgot to mention that I use them.. I do.. I was just telling a friend today about my multiple lists.. One other thing I do.. because my history is set up for everyone to be on the same topic.. my wish lists are ancient history, early history, middle history and modern history (for general books that span long times or over a century mark) and then I have 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries seperate.. easier to sort that way. But within those.. I use the priority NOT for priority but as a way to sort.. High priority being k-3 and lowest being 9-12th. That way I can sort and see which books are for which age level.

Oh, my I need lots of help here. I've seen all kinds of wonderful lists on 4- real. Well not lists really - but various posts with links (all important for me who cannot search effectively at all)of picture books, resources for various historical time periods ....
I am 100% a paper person - but not good at filing. I need some way to have stacks or notebooks with tabs. Actually I love notebooks where the label can be tucked into the spine. I've finally organized all my lesson plans this way. (Takes a lot of space - but truth be, it is the only way I effectively use or remove these things). If I could make a liturgical year binder, and an historical living books binder and a binder of book recommendations by generic age range (picture books, elementary age, high school). Then I could put other recommendations, comments, critiques by subject area. Maybe a binder for math, writing, spelling, phonics, literature, art, and a generic file for misc. - maybe I'd actually use it.
Computers and I just do not get along. I spend far too long searching. If I store a file on my computer, I cannot remember where or what I called it and cannot find it. I tried the Amazon wishlists but then couldn't figure out how to order and then remove stuff. I'm really not wanting to become tech saavy at this point. I need to survive.
Other than the lesson plans organization this past summer, most of my stuff gets printed out - and filed in stacks either in a filing cabinet (nothing ever makes it nice and neatly into folders here - not by me) or piled in stackable in and out boxes on my desk or in an overflow in a drawer or falling all over my desk or shoved into pockets of various notebooks that I happen to be carrying when I come across the treasure. Or the papers are overflowing the computer table - especially when I print an entire 4-real conversation just to get the lists of books with links. I drown in clutter.
I'm looking for some grand ideas here, once I finish culling my overflow of books and plans.

The good news is that Melinda (Seastar) is working on an index of sorts for the picture books.. so that should get MUCH EASIER to find fairly soon.

Thank you all for your organizational tips. Invaluable! Now to put them into action!
Jennifer, our family would surely have benefited from the outdoor tome recently. A fairly new chainsaw broke and so far we haven't been able to find the receipt. The serviceman feels sure it is under warranty.
I am accepting prayers for getting organized!

Another way to handle to reciepts for items.. staple them to the owner's manual. I keep all owner's manuals in the front of the bottom drawer of the file cabinet.. yes it may take me a few minutes to find a particular one.. but the ease of stapling a reciept and tossing it into the drawer means that it gets to that location.

I do have my one "main" Amazon wish list. I never knew you could have more than one! That's something I prob. def. will use b/c I have wish lists at lots of websites but then sometimes forget where those websites are esp. if it's a referral from someone and not something I found on my own.
I do have a 4 drawer cabinet in our garage with separate file folders for manuals and receipts for some of the house things like:
appliances
kids' toys
yard & garden
electronics
I usu. leave the receipt loose in there so I should staple those to the manual. I finally convinced my husband to sell his original "pride and joy" stereo from 1988 that took up half the upstairs gameroom w/ these HUGE speakers and sure enough, we had the manual to give to the guy that bought it just 2 weeks ago. Hard to believe we kept it for 22 years later! I think the receipt was actually in there too. Well, he bought this before me/before kids which is why I call it his original pride and joy.

Could someone talk me through this process? I have wishlists at Amazon too and I think this would be great. I'm just tech-challenged.

Becky, do you have Firefox as your browser? If so, go to Amazon and make sure you are "in" your wish list. At the top of the page there should be a blurb stating "Get the Amazon Wish List Add-On for Firefox" with a Try-It-Now button underneath. Click on that!

Thanks Paula! I have Firefox, but I usually use Internet Explorer, so I've not noticed that feature. I'll give it a try!

Once you've done that, you'll see an extra bar under your Firefox bookmark toolbar. That's your universal Amazon wishlist toolbar.
Now, you'll need to go set up some wishlist categories. Try to think of how you generally organize the books on your shelves...Jodie mentions creating history booklists for specific periods of history (which I thought was a GREAT idea!)...do you have littles...teach a lot of nature study/science...how do you organize the books on your bookshelves. Make a list !!!
Now, go to Amazon and look in the top right corner...there's a blue button that says "Your Lists". Click on it. Click on wishlists. At the top of that page, you should see the offer to try the new Amazon wishlist maker for Firefox. Look over to the left sidebar. For me, I can see all my wishlists over there...scroll down on the page until you see over there on that little left sidebar a blue link that says -- "Create a new Wishlist". Click it and start naming your wishlists - be sure to consider if you'd like them to be public or private and say so when you create them (you can always change this later, but it's easier to set it up now).
On Amazon...go to any item...anything...looking at the page and over there on the right where you see the normal Amazon info about purchasing...look down just a bit and you'll see a tan button that says "Add to wishlist". If you've just created several wishlists there is a little drop down arrow next on the button too. Click the button and you should just be able to choose the wishlist you'd like to add the item to.
Using the universal wishlist maker...once you have the add-on on your toolbar...go to any item NOT on Amazon...here...click this link...now you know what I've been searching for...look at your Amazon toolbar on your Firefox browser (it's directly above your tabs)...on the left in bold click on "Add to Wish List"...a small window will pop up that allows you to add whatever you're looking at to any of your Amazon wishlists...you can add comments about the item, add in the price, choose your wishlist.
Happy wishlist making everyone!

And the Amazon Universal Wishlist is not exclusive to Foxfire.. there are also applications for IE 7 and IE 8.

I use Amazon Listmania to group books together that I will want in the future from the library. Then I pull up the list and use it to make requests on line from the library website. I've used this for years and LOVE IT! I think last count, I had 44 or something like that.
Here's an example: Children learn about Colonial & Revolutionary America
I also use the Foxfire-shopping-thingie.

Suzanne, what is the difference between Listmania and a wish list? I add lots of books to my wish lists, and every few weeks I use those lists to make my library requests. I'm just curious about the way you are doing it, if it saves time, etc.

I think it's faster to add books to the Listmania List. You don't acutally have to GO TO the book to add it to Listmania. You punch in the title, a teeny-version of it pops up and you click add.
BUT, you do have to GET TO that particular list, which is an extra step. But, I usually add them all at once.
Plus it's just nice to have "shopping/wish" lists separate from the 44 categories of other books, for obvious reasons
Some people also keep book-lists in Goodreads, which I like too. But, I had already started in Listmania awhile ago before Goodreads. But, I do like to keep track of MY BOOKS in Goodreads.

Lists that get updated often or I know I'll need access to on a regular basis, I keep in my DRAFTS folder of email. It's ALWAYS open, and easy to just ADD something or look something up.
ie: books read, family read alouds that we complete are in there.
Also, when I brainstorm, I tend to make a DRAFT right there.

Go to amazon and punch in any title of a book. Scroll down on the left side where LISTMANIA should appear somewhere in a box. At the bottom of the LISTMANIA BOX is "CREATE A LISTMANIA LIST." That *should* be it!
