Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Well, we just moved in to our new place, and here is what I've got to work with...

It's about the last ten feet or so of a 9 foot wide room.
I'm going to have to be *very* creative!

You and me both, sister!

I do dream of converting my garage into a schoolroom, someday.

Fantastic topic! Right where I'm thinking at present as my room will become a reality within the next 6 months (hopefully).

I've had dh promise to build floor to ceiling bookcases, picture book display shelves, picture book bins like at the library; the big four bins with space underneath, I want ours on wheels. I also know a book trolley will be a very practical addition so the children can dump and I'll re-shelve.(I've given up on them)

Previously we had two communal tables one for the older ones and one for the littler ones. That worked really well but we didn't have the computer in the same area and that was a drawback. We won't have two tables this time as the older ones will be have a long shelf attached to the wall, this will be a bank of computers and desk space for my high-schoolers.

I would recommend tall, lockable cupboards to house craft and learning games. If you have little ones they can get in and trash otherwise.

I have a big corkboard which is wonderful but my current whiteboard is too small, I'd love a bigger one.

Gleaning lots of ideas to add here

Reading about IKEA ideas reminded me of my friends remodel recently. She wanted work boxes but found a cheaper way to make it work with 7 children. She purchased buckets from Ikea and runners, and remodeled old furniture. Pictures hereand here

Well I'm with Amy on needing the room to start with.. so just some ideas for consideration.

Plants.. just some simple house plants in hanging pots if your room gets enough light. Like a spider plant or fern or pothos or wandering jew. Of course you can get all sorts of fancy with that and grew lots of different things like cactus or herbs etc. I was just thinking how a plant helps a room feel more cheery.

Because if I had a school room it would probably be the only extra room I had.. I would really like to be able to get a futon couch into it.. lots of pillows and floor pillows too.. but a futon would let me have a "guest room" too.

One of the best things I did for shelving was I purchased the metal long rails which have slots in them. You put metal brackets in the holes? They carry them at Home Depot and Lowes in the organization section. You mount them to the wall and put brackets where you want shelves.... anyway...

The shelves at the home stores are expensive and heavy. So I went to our Habitat for Humanity Restore and bought 1 hollow louvered(sp?)closet door panel. Then I had my husband take the 2 hinges off. Two really long bookshelves for $4.00!

I love a bargain!

Lynette - we LOVE Habitat Restore too! We are blessed to have one just a block away from the house - every time I go past I go in and see what they have.

I'm still trying to figure out how to set up our school room - it's in the other half of the large master {used to be 2 small bedrooms} that DD and I share. Since we have other family members living with us who aren't Catholic sometimes things get tricky having a private space.

Maybe I'll clear out the spot and post a pic for ideas - right now it has DD's little tykes playhouse and a bunch of storage items.

We just found our Habitat restore too...they are open from Wed-Sat and they tell us the best day to go is Wed because even though they are not open to the public, they still pick up from places at least 2x a day and you can get a look at their new finds. I brought 2 rolls of nice wallpaper home to use to make books with the children...hmmm gotta find that link...

Anyhoo, they have lots of interesting things there that you can re-purpose. I am looking for a large-ish frame to replace one that I had..to hold a relief map of Jerusalem out of model magic...a project for the middle and younger kids at the beginning of lent. That way, I can hang it on the wall out of the way. Pray for me..I am going tomorrow after dh gets paid

As for converting the garage?? I would love to convert mine to a huge classroom space/fun room. First I have to convert part of my yard into a garage ....by the time I get this done, I will be homeschooling the grandkids

I want an art studio-area. With a sink and lots of shelving and easily cleanable/don't have to worry about it floors, and a big project table, and room for an easel, and big windows. Attached to the main living area so it's easy to get to. Right now I could make an art studio in my basement and it would have a window, but it's freezing cold down there and everybody would have to walk through the crazy-packed storage room to get there. Not a good place for little ones.

Yes, that is my dearest wish also(along with a sewing room for me, but I digress...)

I think windows make a huge difference. Currently, our school room in the basement has two smallish windows. The wall is cinderblock so I'm guessing we wont be able to replace them with bigger ones.

Our walls were cinder block and it was no problem to put in bigger windows. Our neighbor is a contractor and he did them for us, but it only took a day. It did take some heavy duty power tools    We now have 4 small windows and 2 large ones in basement school room. nd they are all windows that open so we get fresh downstairs, big plus to me!

I just bought an emission free fireplace for our basement. I am so excited about it. We are going to get it up an running this weekend. The fireplaces were on clearance at Home Depot. I am hoping to warms up our space, visually and thermally!

I know that I'm cutoff from society because I'm a homeschooling mom in the backwoods of Minnesota, but what is an emission free fireplace?
