Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Yes, Laura, you choose well. And I like the "chunky homeschooling" term.

This year has been a total upheaval between moving (we still have one more move) and my health issues that have knocked me off my feet.

For the 3 R's, we have a "do the next chapter/thing" going. Last year, I planned what books would go with our historical time period (Middle Ages) and chose lots of books that could go along. To make things easier, we purchased a bunch of G.A. Henty and Ballantyne books from that time period and I just hand them to each of my older kids. They read a chapter a day and do a page of written narration. They read their Bibles and they do the next chapter of Teaching Textbooks. This is working out great. So, I did some initial planning a year ago and we are riding on that.

Also, for history, I took our "spine" and made a chart of sorts with it. I list our spine chapters, and then any other resources I have that would pertain to that chapter. So, when I cover that chapter in our spine, I just look to see what else we have that would go along with that. It is NOT planned out by days or weeks, but by chapter. That way if I only cover one chapter that week, I highlight it, and do the next chapter next time I can.

I also made and spiral bound, a page with three sections (top, middle, and bottom) that has an empty box to the left and lines to the right, like a comic strip. This is my children's favorite way of recording their history studies. After every reading, they illustrate the topic/person and then write about it. Again, I did this all last summer.

Have we used these yet this year? No! This year has not gone at all as I had planned. But that extra prep work will make it very easy for me to jump right in when things settle down.

I am a list maker, so I always make a weekly list for myself. I also make a weekly list for the kids of subjects so that I can refer them back to the list to see if they are done. I want to teach them self-government in hoping that they learn it better than me.

This has been a very humbling year of relying on the Lord to fill in the gaps. Every attempt at doing more than the 3R's has failed. You'd think I'd be enjoying this break, but instead I spend it worrying and feeling guilty. What a waste! I'm praying that the Lord would help me seize whatever part of the day I have and to accomplish all that He has for me and rest in His care of us. (sorry so long!)

Hi Natalia, what is the name of the yahoo group? I know that there are several out there and when you do a search, many 'pop' up.

Thanks

Thank You Natalia. That is exactly the type of thing I've been trying to wrap my head around. So glad I don't need to start from scratch. Such a simple concept, but helpful!

I thought I'd read something along these lines before. Thanks Natalia for reminding me where to look!
