They have unveiled the 2010 postage stamps for the US. There is one of Mother Teresa. Very cool...

I saw this news today on the TV news crawl! Any word on the value of the stamp? I'm hoping it will be .44 cents so I can used them for all my mail!

Yes, it is a .44 stamp. You can see a larger, more vivid picture of the stamp here.
The stamp will be issued on August 26 (her birthday).

News from a month ago, but I just heard that there has been an atheist group trying to stop the issue of this Bl. Mother Teresa stamp.

It would have helped for me to read the entire thread. 
I remembered when you posted about the stamp, Mary, and went to the post office today to pick up the Mother Teresa stamps.
The clerk told me she hadn't heard about Mother Teresa stamps. Asked me if I was sure the post office was releasing them, not some infomercial. Then told me it probably wouldn't happen because she is a "religious figure" and they don't sell stamps like that. She asked the clerk next to her and both got a kick out of my inquiry.
I'll be back there on the 26th for my stamps!

Ugh...how can they not know this. SO much for postal workers...even I know the listing of stamp coming out during the year and I'm just a patron. You'd think that especially with the "controversy" it garnered earlier that they would be very aware of it.
Anyway, I am super excited for it to be issued in a few weeks. But have seen that the issue date is now Sept. 5 which is the anniversary of her death, so it won't be on her birthday as previously reported. It will be unveiled at the National Shrine on that day. There is a Mass and unveiling cereominy following Mass. Wish I was going to be in DC...
Speaking of her birthday - it's her 100th birthday. Have you all seen the Time magazine special commemorative issue? What plans does everyone have for celebrating Mother Teresa this year? Do you know of special evnets being held anywhere? I've updated the thread to include the 100th anniversary and we can include ideas here.
I've been trying to get some stamps from other countries. There are many countries that already have Mother Teresa stamps. We are going to compare them to the new US one.

Can we talk books about Mother Teresa? I know the Demi one had some problematic passages. Any good books for children for teaching about Mother Teresa? Her work?

Yes, I was hoping to talk books and other resources as well. This 100th birthday anniversary with the stamp and all is a great time to focus on a Bl. Mother Teresa study.

And Jenn, I just reserved the Demi book again as I don't own it. I remember it being good though - not complete in the sense that a Catholic author would present her life, but I don't remember any passages being especially problematic. Well, thursdays are our usual day to focus on the saints for our religion studies, and since the 26th conveniently falls on a thursday, we will simply choose her as our saint of the week, even though she is not *officially* a saint yet. Not sure if we will do a craft or a cake or just a notebook page for dd's saint notebook. Still looking for ideas on that.

Well, I've stumped myself. There was some book, I was sure it was Demi's book, but I'm glad I was wrong. I thought it was Margot that explained the passage that was a problem, but for the life of me, I can't find reference.
And I've looked the book over and can't find a problem, either. I had the book, had a conversation, and shelved the book all these years. But now I have foggy memory.

This is my favorite book about her : Stories Told by Mother Teresa  It's out of print now.  The price at Amazon isn't that bad compared to the last time I looked, it was no lower than $80.

Hmmm...I remember some discussions with Margot as well, though not specific books.
And, I see that the Demi book is being released in paperback at the end of the month. Just in time for our studies...

So, how did you celebrate yesterday. We got the Demi book to read. I did check at the post office just to make sure and they aer not out yet. So the 5th should be the day. I did get another stamp of her - one from Cyprus. There was a big write up about the stamp in our local Catholic newspaper. The artist who designed the US stamp is from Colorado. We are going to continue to focus a little each day on Bl. Teresa from now to Sept. 5.

I was reminded that Bennett's book had a story of Mother Teresa, so we read that yesterday:
The Children's Book of Heroes by William Bennett.
I think it's very well-done and touches the child's heart.

Oh, that's good to know! I just pulled that book out last week to add to our studies, but hadn't noticed the mother Teresa story! Great!
I have to say, I read the Demi book to dd yesterday and it was kind of a flop. Too many dates and names, very cut-and dry.
The Indian food, however, was a big hit!

Oh Theresa, I understand. It isn't one of those "cuddle up and enjoy a cozy story" style read-aloud picture books. It is much more of a factual biography for the older elementary. Your post reminded me that I had considered trying to read it at a liturgical year story time a few years back and decided it would be too long and factual for that age group we were working with. It's greatest strength for me is the gorgeous illustration.

Yes, the illustrations are lovely in the Demi book. That's for sure. Just not what I was looking for that day.
As for the food, I made curried chicken and warm lentil salad. I'm not even sure it is authentically Indian, but it worked for us!LOL!
