Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Books and everyone,

We're already planning for 9th grade next fall, because we're moving some time this summer and that will eat up all of my free time and then some.

So far, I've decided to give my son a limited choice of subjects within the areas of science, social studies and foreign language. I looked at HSYOD's subject list and college entrance requirements (right now my son is thinking U of Maryland, Air Force Academy, U of Calif or something in Indiana...a broad spectrum! I look at Catholic colleges on his behalf, too.) .

So, for social studies he can choose between American Goverment and World History (we're finishing U. S. History right now, so he doesn't want to turn around and do a 9th grade course). For science, I think it will be Biology, Earth Science or ??? (That's today's goal, pick the third science class.) I'm trying to be wide open on foreign language, but I'm sure hoping he doesn't want to learn Chinese! (It would be useful, but hard for me to teach. Between us, dh and I can handle French, German, Italian, Latin and Russian, and probably Spanish...but Arabic and Chinese are beyond me.)

Once I get this selection process over with, I will begin my search for spine texts, literature resources, etc. (AKA The Fun Part!) I'm hoping to use the community college for some computer and art classes (they have classes geared toward homeschoolers, yee-ha).

I hope everyone will share their plans as things develop. I really learn a lot from everyone else's experiences.

I'm way behind here in reading I know.

Elizabeth, I just wanted you to know that this phrase has really struck a chord with me. I'm going to write it out and paste it on the fridge.

Actually HSOYD sounds fantastic, but for my dd I'm thinking it would actually be too structured for her. Two weeks ago I would have bought it but I'm slowly learning some valuable lessons, the first is to work WITH my daughter's learning style.

I pray it provides guidance for many of you. Sounds great.

Erin,

I know what you're saying about working with your daughter. HSoYDs actually encourages that -- one of the benefits I see to it is that the author put in all kinds of alternatives to the standards -- midwifery or nursing rather than just biology, for example.

If you can borrow a copy - or maybe we can ask Theresa at CHC to post some sample incl the table of contents -- you can see what I mean.

I guess I could fly mine out Down Under for you to see
