Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Cay- do not feel guilty! There is always Interlibrary loan... for free/almost free I can get a copy of almost any book I want.

My problem is I often don't know about all the great books out there... I need your lists!

Ok...this is nonsense, Cay! Your books provide a service, just as this board does, in recommending books. This is so valuable on so many levels! Great booklists are an extremely helpful tool in this living book oriented lifestyle! No one here should feel guilty about linking to or reviewing a book source. That is simply information shared. If it blesses someone, how wonderful! Thanks be to God! Temptation isn't a bad thing either! Virtue is born there! If someone recognizes after considering finances that a book purchase should be put off for another day, or the decision to visit the library rather than Amazon is made - VIRTUE!

While most of us link to Amazon, many are able to check out libraries. I make notes for shopping at favorite used book shops.

We each are responsible for our own habits, for exercising self-discipline in this area. NO ONE has pushed any book down anyone's throats!!!!

Ok...sorry for the rant. I felt strongly about that. If you've shared your hard work - through books like Catholic Mosaic, Picture Perfect Childhood, these boards, a list on your blog, you shared in the hope it would bless and assist others. Your lists and sharing have blessed me. I know I'm not alone. Keep 'em coming!!!

to you, Cay! You have such a kind and considerate heart!

Not at all Cay.. think of all the money you save people because they will buy good books to start with instead of buying and getting rid of so-so books along the way.

Honestly, if someone is going to overspend on books, they'll do it with or without lists.. good lists just let people buy good books without having to weed through the multitudes on their own.

I didn't vote because my answer is...
I never find any.
I use the express boxes for the library and order my selection on the library site on the internet, so I am mostly a "taker."
I have loved all the suggestions I asked for here. I just don't have the time to look for cool books.

Well, I'm buoyed up by the encouragement of posting, so I'll feel guilty no more. You'll probably see a rash of posting

Seriously, though, I have come across books about books, and some recommend OOP books. Sometimes demand makes them come back into print. So, I haven't been feeling as guilty recommending...

I planned to post a list of our family favorites, some of which must have been listed on this forum dozens of times. But I don't want to bore people. So I think I'll post them on my blog. That way, you'll visit if and when you want to see what appeals to our family.

How I wish this were still true for me. My library now charges $5 and up per book. It's cheaper for me to just go ahead and buy a book we really love.

Tina-
You would not be boring anyone with your list if you post it here. You would be helping us out. I'm always eager to read what people have on their favorites list- I'm always sure to find something new for my kids

Hmmm....

I'd say for me it's a combo of

- I forget -- we read so many picture books, and I try to make a mental note to post about it, then return it before I get a chance to, and next thing I know I have 5 other books I want to recommend and have already forgotten the titles of the last 5.

- I do a search, and turns out people already love it and it's already posted here (I guess that's what happens when we have the same good tastes in books!)

That pretty much sums it up for me, too.

I will try to make a more concerted effort, as children's picture books are one of my true loves.

I'm with Lisa on the "duh" thing. I just assume everyone has already discovered what I just did. I'm usually a step behind in everything!('')

Only one step behind, Stephanie? I'm about a dozen steps behind. I'm thrilled that we started reading Advent books on time this year!

The thing about "old favorites" is that they ARE old. I don't get to the library (unless, of course, there's a sale ) very often to find new picture books that we like and like Jenn said, we like a whole lot of out of print books. I don't want to send others on a wild goose chase due to our particular preferences.

If I was more organized.. I would love the OOP book suggestions because rather than hunting for a particular book.. how helpful is that for going to library and estate and garage sales and looking through old books.. how often might a treasure been passed over from lack of knowing about it.

It has been really interesting to see the volume of responses here to this question. Who woulda guessed. I started a response then took a break to watch the football game with family and returned to find lots more thoughts shared.

These responses have me thinking...and I'll add to Melinda's compilation.

OK, I think I'm seeing a bit of the problem here. There seems to be a sense that a book mentioned has to be NEW, easy to find, meet the standards all members. Hmmmm.....not realistic. I know the forum is titled Picture Book Discoveries. I wasn't involved when it was named but think it was probably because it is catchy and offers the sense of a treasure (hmmm....maybe Picture Book Treasures would be more accurate...) It seems that some are taking that very literally - that the book must be a discovery, something others don't know about, found only by you. If you read the description of the forum is only says "Share great titles and experiences with picture books you and your family love." Really it just needs to be something that your family really enjoyed that you see has value to share. You can share additional ideas as well, but there is no expectation of developing a unit or add on materials (that's why we have a rabbit trails/unit study forum ).

Old tried and true favorites are great to share. Not everyone is going to be familiar with them and those who also love them can add in their reviews, ideas, memories to the thread as well. In the Picture Book a Day Challenge that was started a couple years ago the first book Angie highlighted to start it off was Snowflake Bentley - not a little known book by any means . Another example is this past thread where Jenn Sal posts about Mike Mulligan and the Steam Shovel. It's clearly a book that many people are already going to know about. She mentions it is a classic up front so there is no question it has not just been "discovered" and people added all kinds of great thoughts. Love that!

Fear of posting something that has already been mentioned. I will admit up front I do like when things stay together on the forum and I would rather for specific narrow topics like book titles, that we keep the info together when possible. Titles are about the easiest thing to search for and find on these boards. If it has been mentioned before, that can be found pretty easy and it would be great to see old threads resurrected and added to - that reinforces that this a good find (a "treasure") and brings it to the attention of others who are new members, who might not have seen it the first time, or who have forgotten about it. We all can use reminders. But if you don't see an earlier thread and post again, that is okay too.

We have several tutorials for using the search engine.
A little technical tutorial with your tea
Search & Rescue: Search Engine Use
When you put in a book title and then tell the search engine to search by "phrase" and chose to search only in Picture Book Discoveries, you really narrow the search to finding if that book has been mentioned here before.   Just tried that with Crow Call and found it had been mentioned by me when I was still waiting for it from the library holds I'd placed. So now I need to go post it since I've read it - (see I told you I forget...)

I really like the format of the Picture Book a Day Challenge. The intent behind that was to produce an easily searchable listing. That's why it was recommended that it have the keywords for searchability. Melinda already clarified that a moderator would be happy to help with links if you aren't able to add those. And of course links aren't necessary or even possible sometimes, especially with OOP.

If you're worried about it being considered twaddle or not meeting a standard, you can always be very specific and mention it isn't the greatest "literature" but is a fun and loved book - I like what Jodie shared about Biscuit and Melinda about Rosie's babies as books in that category. If there are parts that could be of concern or questionable for others just mention it. I've done that before - for example shared that it has a "environmentalist" slant to it or has a comment about women's roles or something like that. Then people can know up front and choose accordingly. But really there is no one who can put a seal of approval on all books and I think most of us have realized that even if recommended here it is good to pre-read, not just take someone's recommendation.

Maddie wrote:

Well, we're not in real life - we're a fantasy world - so we love 'em. Really, my experience is that there is a real appreciation for that here, that you have to search harder for to find enough like minded folks in our real worlds. I love hearing about oop print books because our library system is awesome and I can almost always get them - like the The Ageless Story that Jenn recommended on her blog.

Regarding the expense aspect - notice I use the library almost exclusively and get tons of pictures books, then am very selective about what I actually purchase. I realize all don't have the luxury of that but no one should feel gulity for mentioning them.

Please do recommend OOP all you OOP specialists!

And in another thread, Waverley's suggestion for threads that focus on a specific topic is a great one that Melinda is going to follow up on after the new year. That way everyone should feel free to add books that fit that category regardless if there is a separate thread for a book already or not. I'm really excited about the category thread possibilities.

Please excuse my verbose response. Looking forward to more posting here at Picture Book Discoveries.

But it's totally fine to just be a "taker," too .

Well, just chiming here that it used to be because I didn't know how to hyperlink. I only figured it out about a month ago after printing out the tutorial and sticking it near my monitor! Now I run searches to see if anyone has posted on it already, and usually someone else has beaten me to the punch.

And I wanted to share that I come here specifically because there are so many devout 2nd and 3rd generation Catholic moms who know about the OOP books I wouldn't know to look for. Because of moms here last month, I have a wonderful oop Dujarie book lined up for next year's LFYL on Cardinal Newman and an oop vision book on St. John Neumann as well. Both were very reasonable, costwise. When Jenn posts book suggestions, I take notes. So please, those of you especially with oop book knowledge, keep posting?

I was just thinking along those lines this morning... having a list of books is so helpful, because then I recognize titles at various sales and thrift stores and am delighted when I find them.

And do I carry a list with me? No- I'm not that organized However,my brain is more sponge-like than I realize. Even if I've just read over a list a couple of times, it gets the old wheels turning, and I'm likely to think: hmm... that title sounds familiar....

As Mary mentioned, I hope to start some list threads in January, so be thinking about what two topics you would most like to see posted. I was thinking maybe a religious topic and another topic (ex. Epiphany books and snow books). If you have suggestions, let me know. Maybe I'll post another poll at the end of the month and we can vote on them

I love to be on the hunt for treasures. And I love talking about them.

I have learned about so many great books from this forum. And I find I do so many rabbit trails, finding out about an author or illustrator and then stumble upon a book. This past weekend I just found a Thornton Burgess book, The Littlest Christmas Tree, using some of the same animal characters in his other books. The illustrations and story were so sweet.

Anyway, I'll say it again, I'm glad for the license to talk about them! And Jen just linked to this page of Christmas poetry by Lauren Ford, so you can see some of the illustrations by her in Ageless Story (did you like it, Mary?)
