I'm seriously considering the Didache Series, I'd love to know members thoughts, experiences.
Also do you think you need the student and the teachers books?
By the way if other Australian are interested they are very expensive to buy here but cheaper options are abe books and Better World. (That is can anyone tell me if these are the correct authors?)

They are excellent! We use them here at home and were blessed to have the four volume set given to us a few years ago but I think I saw recently that there is another one. . . yes here it is --The Sacraments: Source of Our Life in Christ
A homeschool mom I know who directs RCIA at her parish uses the first book as her RCIA text.
Our local Catholic High school uses them too!

We only have one of the teachers books and we really haven't used it so I can't say. We use the texts alone.

I love them. We do use the teacher books - I use the tests that is in them and to grade the end chapter questions. This year (ds is doing the scripture study one) I am encouraging him to do the student workbook to review for the test, so I got the teacher edition for that for the answers.

Thank you so much for your responses
Would you say they are very visual?
Do you think they would be a good fit for children who are the following:
My ds14 doesn't like Faith & Life, doesn't like Fr Laux but would be happy to read saints stories only.
My dd16 is more analytical, enjoyed Fr Laux, pretty much will read anything.
Reading your responses and considering we don't often use textbooks perhaps we would be fine with just the student books. Thanks Michelle for verifying they are the correct authors
Should I start with the first, regardless of the children's ages and just work out way through?
I can just feel your enthusiasm.

Does anybody know the difference between the semester and the full course edition? I wonder if the semester edition covers the most important material or the same material in less depth?

Is the Complete Course what you all buy? Or the thinner workbooks? Where is the teacher's manual?

I am wondering the same thing. We have used Understanding Scriptures and Church History. These books are the full course editions. My ds loved the books, but then again, this is one of his favorite subjects.
Does anyone have more information on the semester editions?

Hi,
The impression I got after talking to my local Catholic bookstore owner and friend is that the semester versions are more for the school systems. I wonder how different they really are? They are still publishing the original 4 book set.
Here's a page with more info. Maybe we need to email and ask them directly the content differences? Right now, we are sticking with the original set and we love it! I do, and the kids do, too.
God bless,
Angela
ETA: I just emailed them the question. I'll post here any response I receive!

Erin, to answer your question about the visual layout of the books, they are really wonderful with lots of color and helpful (not just distracting) visuals, including, if I correctly recall (my books are in VA right now), some lovely artwork. There is plenty of material in the book itself and the teacher's guide is not strictly necessary, but it does have good information and the tests in it. If you like to test, it would be a time saver.
One nice thing about the Didache series is that it is both orthodox and contemporary. A problem I had with Fr. Laux's series is that, while it is excellent in content, it uses the older names for the prophets and books of the Bible which is just totally confusing for a younger student.
I think you could use this series for both of your teens, but the older student would get more out of it. It's well-written and engaging, but not quite a "story", so your 14 yo might feel it was more "schoolish".

Hi all!
Received this response today:
Dear Angela,
The Didache full course is a yearlong textbook. The Semester textbooks
cover the same subject with just half the material.
Sincerely, Ron Odegaard
This is what I was thinking, but it is good to have confirmation of that from the publisher! Hope it's helpful!!

Thanks for that Angela
I wrote to ask them whether they recommended any particular book to start with, I still haven't heard back yet.

Erin,
I called the publisher 3 years ago when we began using them with our Catholic high school co-op to ask them about a recommended order. They told me they are all written on the same level, but most people:
1--Intro to Catholicism
2--understanding Scripture
3--History of the Church
4--Morality
It does not matter where you begin, but he did recommend saving morality till the end because of the subject matter.
My daughter started with History of the Church, then Intro, then scripture and is now finishing up with morality. These have her favorite texts and her knowledge of our faith has really increased.

I'm thinking Intro for my ds14 and Scripture with dd16.
Keep the great reviews rolling in

Do most of you use Didache on its own or add other books or resources to it to?

Regards age appropriateness I've just received this reply from the publisher:
Introduction to Catholicism is a 9th grade book, Understanding Scripture is the 10th grade book, History of the Church is the 11th grade book and Our Moral Life in Christ is the 12th grade book.

Does anyone have a recommendation for where to purchase the Didache books? The prices seem similar, so I guess I'm asking if anyone knows if there is a place that sells them offering free shipping.

Oooh, I always love to recommend Linda at Sacred Heart Books and Gifts. She offers these books with free shipping and a $2 handling fee.
This is from her home page: Unfortunately, our vendors have been increasing their handling costs for inbound freight. Prices for packaging materials are rising as well. To stay competitive, we work on thin margins - even the small costs of packaging can make the difference between a net profit and a net loss on a transaction.
Hope this helps!
God bless,
Angela
We have carefully evaluated many options when determining how best to address the added costs of doing business. We have determined that in order to continue to offer free shipping, we are going to implement a handling charge of $2.00 per order. This charge will apply only once on all orders no matter the size or the number of shipments made to fulfill the order. The charge will be added to your order when we get ready to ship your order out.
