Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Ladies,
What a testament that the idea of a Morning Basket is the Holy Spirit's and not mine...that it is able to be translated and adapted into your homes and bring such blessing to your families! I'm so overjoyed that this is the case!

What was sort of confusing me was my different ages. For years we did the Morning Basket thing and are still doing it- but with the disparity in ages it seems that I have a younger who is not understanding and an older one that just wants to get on with things!

I reread an old blog post about 'Morning Times' and realised that if we do prayer and one our cm ish type things such as Shakespeare or Plutarch first than the oldest one can leave at that point and the little one, well, as long as he isn't interupting he can do what he likes!!

That's exactly what I did, Kristie. I subdivided our Morning Basket so that if my little fella is ready to move on, I can do the other sections with the bigger kids without him.

I named one section after a favorite book I'm reading to my little guy - Kindergarten Gems. We read a Kindergarten Gem either from this book or another of my choice, a gem from Their Hearts are His Garden, and a question or two from the Illustrated Catechism for Children. He comes back for poetry time and singing time, but it's important that he have opportunities to move in between.

There are a couple of elements that function as glue holding us together...art opportunities while I read and beeswax for sculpting. When I can keep those hands active and engaged there seems to be more cohesiveness.

Each of the little subsections of the Morning Basket can be rearranged to fit our needs. The one thing that doesn't move is the morning devotion time. We all start there.

The Morning Basket seems to ease everyone into a rhythm for the day. My little fella is ready to engage in other learning activities (his choice), and the bigger kids aren't slammed into a big assignment, they've eased into the day and we've done it as a family. I like how it works for us.

The other function of the morning basket is that I built it several years ago to address survival schooling for me. I built it to address all the ages at once, grounded in the liturgical year and the richness of our faith, and hit on elements of beauty - poetry, nature study, art opportunities (elements that are generally the first to drop in survival schooling, but that children really need to see and experience, especially when mom is a walking IV machine!). I built it to be a stand alone in times of crisis for me. It functions very well in this way. We do the morning basket and then I can just say, do the next math lesson and read for an hour. Done. No more thought.

I don't know if this helps in any way, Kristie. It sounds as if you've got a fairly good morning routine, and the idea you found on another thread of arranging your morning basket/routine so that there are sections that can be arranged/rearranged to address the attention spans of all of the children would probably assist you! Good luck!
