Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My own school motto was 'Serve God and Be Cheerful'. I haven't adopted it, but it sounds pretty good to me!

It's perfectly fine for them to choose ANY Saint. My oldest son (now 24) chose Mary for his confirmation name.

Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly and in a calm spirit. Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever, even if your whole world seems upset. --St. Francis DeSales

Now, I don't know if that should be a motto for our school, or something I should have tattooed in reverse on my forehead, so that I see it everytime I look into a mirror!

Right, and my daughter choose St Martin De Porres.

lol, I love that one by St. Francis de Sales, isn't he great?

We do have a school motto, it's on my homeschool tracker! "For I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content. Everywhere and in all things I have learned to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Phillipians 4:11-13.

Ok, it's a little long for a motto I guess. But I have been known to have days where I mutter the last part under my breath regularly.

I think I have finally landed on our school motto:

"Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it."

This is a quote of unknown origin, often attributed to Goethe.
I personally don't care who said it. I love it anyway. And it suits us, I think.

I already had our "word" to keep our focus: SERVE

We really need to work on this around here.

Then yesterday's 1st reading gave us our "school" quote:

"Forsake foolishness that you may live; advance in the way of understanding." ~ Book of Proverbs 9:6

I was going to go with the "obedience and patience" from John XXIII, but have decided on this one from St. Josemaria Escriva:

Don't say: 'That person gets on my nerves.' Think: 'That person sanctifies me.'
– St. Josemaria Escriva, The Way, #174

I'm going to try to come up with some fun ways to use this, particularly before we start co-op!

Went searching and this one hit me!

Our Motto may turn out to be:

'Let us serve God; He will certainly take care of us and we shall want for nothing.'

St. Ignatius of Loyola

And this one is running a close second:

'He who trusts himself is lost. He who trusts in God can do all things.'
St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori

I am not sure. I am leaning towards "Totus tuus ego sum et omnia mea tua sunt" which means, "I am all Yours, and all that have belongs to You."

I just found the PERFECT motto for me this year: Encourage and Teach with Patience (2Tim 4:2)

This is our Bishop's motto and I think I really need to have it tattooed on my arm so I don't forget it!

After much deliberation,I will be using
" Love one another as I have loved you."
We can all use a little more love around here (especially with 4 bickering boys :)
Maybe we'll progress to an actually 'schooly' motto by next year :/

Wow!!! Great food for thought. My personal, "this is how I look at academics" motto, is "Education is not the filling of a bucket but the lighting of a fire". W.B. Yeats

May I be flippant - my motto is "survival"

More seriously - our motto is always Philippians 4v6-7 (whatever is true, whatever is beautiful...) Also "what good is it for you to gain the whole world and lose your soul" and my blog subtitle "educating for eternity" I like my friend's "Heaven not Harvard" And I am going to adopt the quote that Lisa D has above
Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly and in a calm spirit. Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever, even if your whole world seems upset. --St. Francis DeSales

4ladsmom - I have a poster with the WB Yeats Quote in my school room!

Jennifer, I, too, have always love Philippians 4:8!

And I love and just printed some of the quotes from all you wonderful ladies! Thank you!

I do love the idea of a school motto. I think I will throw out some ideas for the family during prayer this morning and start them thinking on a motto that we can all decide upon. I want to see what God is placing on their hearts too!

Famous Mother Teresa Prayer- The Final Analysis Prayer

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway.

What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.

Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway.

In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.

I love this, it always brings tears to my eyes... it's so beautiful and so true...
