Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Well I had my first 9 weeks all planned out (though I wasn't super happy with them), until I saw Elizabeth and Jen's Serendipity plans. Then I scrapped my almost 13 yr old dd's plans and decided that the Literature for a Young Lady would be perfect for her. She loved it too so that is what she will be doing (tweaked for her of course). Then like the next day I got the Prairie Primer in the mail and it just seemed perfect for my dd who is almost 11 and my ds8. They were going to be doing a bunch of stuff together anyway so I had them look at the Primer and they loved it. So I scrapped most of their plans and we are going with that for them. They will also be working together to make a states notebook. Everyone will continue to read from our history list (Reading your way through history) where we just happen to be starting the American history area and will cover both time periods that everyone will be studying more in depth Everyone except dd6 will be doing Balt Cat and everyone will do F&L, Bible, and Saint reading too.The girls will be doing some Latin and teaching textbooks for math and my son will be doing handwriting and grammar and spelling work. My dd6 and ds8 will be doing Singapore math. Dd6 will be working on handwriting and we are really focusing on reading. She asked me the other day when she was going to learn to read. I told her that I have tried to teach her 2 formal times and she wouldn't cooperate so we stopped and relaxed. Maybe this year she will get it and I think I am going to try something new to teach her, not sure what yet, but we are going to be doing some hand-on phonics type stuff. We are starting Aug 10 and I am hoping to get 4 weeks in before the baby comes and then we will take a week or 2 off and work until my dh comes home for R&R and then take that time off, then we will work until Advent and then take that time off

Yes - literature choices are proving difficult - so many of the novels for her age range (she's about to turn 13) seem to fall into the same pattern of the oppressed woman looking for a way out of the "conventional" roles of that time.

I have a few suggestions, though some are out of print and may be hard to find unless you have a good interlibrary loan system.

Beorn the Proud (Madeleine Polland) - despite the title one of the two main characters is a 12yo Irish girl captured by Vikings. Excellent book.

The Striped Ships (Eloise Jarvis McGraw) - well written story of a Saxon girl caught up in the aftermath of the Norman Conquest of England. You can read a review by Karen Edmisten here

Casilda and the Rising Moon (Elizabeth Borton de Trevino) - story of St. Casilda, an 11th century Spanish princess

A Proud Taste of Scarlet and Miniver (E.Konigsburg) - slightly quirky version of the story of Eleanor of Aquitaine, told by characters in purgatory waiting for the arrival of King Henry II.

Not to hijack the thread...but The Striped Ships is an excellent book but beware of a scene in the beginning where our poor Saxon maid is put in what could have been a very comprimising position.

Late here, but I *think* my plan for the year may finally be coming together. Dd 13 has been planning her own but I really wanted to give it a little guidance. I ended up on Ambleside Online's website and loved it! I really like the plan of doing the same Art study, composer study, and Shakespeare work for all of the same children.

So, she will be doing AO 9th year, the "lite" schedule which is NOT light! Along with this she has Apologia Physical Science, Jacob's Algebra, Henle Latin and Didache for religion.

Ds 11 (6th grade) will be doing AO 6th year. I was going to be doing Greek and Roman studies anyway so this fits in nicely. He also will be starting Lively Latin, as will his younger sisters. He will also do Teaching Textbooks.

The next two girls, 9 and 7, will be doing Sonlight 4.

My 6 year old will continue learning to read. I hope to incorporate a circle time for her and the three year old. They both tend to get pushed to the back burner.

And all of this will flow wonderfully because of workboxes! I hope. I am excited about the workbox idea and think it will really help me keep it all straight.

We are going to be doing Winter Promise Ancients for my 5th and 7th grader and Animal Worlds for my 1st and 3rd grader. They both look great. For language arts, we will be doing All about spelling along with brave writer. Teaching textbooks and MUS for math, Latina Christiana and Henle for Latin (the oldest 2 will be doing the MP online classes) and various religion courses.

I have huge lists of details... but in a nutshell, I'm hoping to try some sort of schedule around here for the first time.

1st grader - Classical Conversations at home, as a spine, diving into any of the weekly topics as much or little as he likes.

4yo - workboxes, and sitting in on CC as much or little as he likes.

Montessori on-the-side for all, a variety of catechetical materials, local home-school PE class, violin classes, and helping with a big family project for the fall: planning & building a cabin in the country.

I have more plans for myself than my children right now. I need to learn to be much more disciplined! I need to throw out the self-pity and "fake it till you feel it" with the joy. And returning to daily mass with the kids once a week. Lord, help me!

We will begin our schoolwork next week...August 17th...with copywork, math and reading.

Chelsea will also begin Pointe and Advanced Lyrical next week.

We're easing slowly into our real-life plans for my girls and co-op. These things will start in September.

I have a more detailed list of our learning in one of my many, many, many notebooks. Must find it and type it to memory. And all the book baskets are stacked and ready.

My rhythm this month...this year...is "slowly." Anything else makes my head spin.

With an addition to the house going on right now, school is not at the forefront of my mind at the moment. I did manage to order the books and yesterday we went and bought some supplies.

This year we are continuing with Classical Conversations

My dd (11th grade) is doing Challenge III for most of her classes. She will also be taking some courses at our local college through the dual enrollment program. She will be taking Spanish 201 and a Chemistry course. For her religion I am not sure yet. I am thinking about doing the Homeschool Connection Theology course but it conflicts with something else. I have to decide if I will register anyway or if we should do something like the Didache series. Or I might continue having her work through Elizabeth's extensive confirmation reading list.

For my ds (7th grade) we are doing CC Challenge A. This is going to be, I think, a big jump in his work load, but I think it is going to be a great year for him. For religion I am going to start on his two year Confirmation preparation which will include working on a Confirmation Notebook.

My ds (2nd grader) will work on CC Foundations program and we will continue working through Explode the Code,Singapore Math and some Serendipity as well. I still have to firm up some aspects of his curriculum and see about his FHC preparation.

My 14yo dd really enjoyed it, as did I. Eleanor is a great person to tie in with her feminine contemporary, Hildegard. We looooove Hildegard!

I have a couple of blog posts compiling online resources for medieval music, starting w/gregorian chant. There is an excellent show that you can listen to streaming called Harmonia. I have listed links for those shows related to Hildegard, plus other resources. Take a look here (scroll down):
