Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We won't be done for another five weeks or so--nearly the end of June. We had a couple of interruptions due to family emergencies. We plan to start earlier next year (end of August) to accomodate a family trip. So, we are really only taking July off.
The math books are really the driver for the end of the school year, aren't they? :)

Our school year officially ended on May 19 - but we start early in August and sometimes even July when the weather around here is very hot.

I've had years that we drag school work into the summer and frankly, my children don't like that at all and I burn out. They like a definite end time. Without that they get nostalgic for the public school they've never been to - cause the public schools get off whether they finish books or not.

That being said - we do a lot of learning over the summer. One dd will be taking a Red Cross course, everyone will read tons, we are doing a tour of a cave (the man who wrote the book will be our guide) and we'll be at the Veterans Museum at different points. My boys still have their garden and we've already enjoyed tomatoes, broccoli and green beans plus various herbs from it. Several have requested swimming lessons. I do not direct any learning during the summer - just support whatever strikes their fancy. I have one child who plans to begin Chemistry and AlgebraII this summer.

Our school schedule is planned around our oldest's college breaks. If she is home, we take a break, basically.

I need the summer to figure out next year, observe where things are taking off, and such. Usually one thing that does happen is that my children read all the supplemental reading I've planned for next year (in history and science) when it comes in over the summer and is sitting in the middle of the floor waiting to be filed. They also discover "new" books as I rearrange my shelves and books are piled everywhere. At some point, I talk to them about their desires for next year - so right now I have requests for American History from most - and Roman History from one. Science - one has requested Anatomy and Physiology and no one else has really specified - so my plan will be to provide lots of hands on, good reads and 3 part cards in the Life science areas for the rest - except the 2 folks who are finishing physical science. (Well they are free to explore this area and probably will, but we will finish Physical Science).

We had one of our very best years, accomplished tons and the children have 1 and all requested lesson plans like I did this year again - only preferably for the whole year to start with. It helped us all stay on track but loose enough for us to take rabbit trails that were really valuable. I'm excited and refreshed by our year, taking a few weeks to just enjoy and plan for my parents 50th while organizing the plans I have into clearly labeled notebooks - but then am ready to begin planning next year in a few weeks. ( I do love planning as it is my stimulus for continued learning and reading and an excuse to take the time to do it so this is something I'm looking forward to - just so you know).
