Actually, you are right, I know of quite a few kids at benedictine who are not Catholic. They are just kids who lived locally.
Now - can anyone suggest a Catholic College, with a higher percentage of Catholics attending, that has a focus on Sciences too? I have one budding Scientist in our household, and a straight liberal arts degree wouldn't be the best idea. But Lab Sciences at a secular college don't really fill me with confidence either, as this child is on the autism spectrum, and so is very literally minded, and abstracts like "faith" are already hard since he is a "need to touch and see and verify" type.

Mary: we have a good family friend (actually a few) who went to ND and not only got a fabulous education, but also kept and built their faith, and this in the midst of some of the more liberal leadership.

This is good to hear - I keep hearing stories like this. Thank you for your prayers.

It's very funny with my own kids -- Joe (almost 20) wanted to go to an SEC school and when he found out that LSU gave legacy scholarships (more than 50% OFF out-of-state ) he jumped at the chance. LSU has a huge Catholic population but that was less a consideration for him than the majors available and the ability to root for an SEC team. He LOVES living in Baton Rouge (except the hurricanes got him this year ). But he wouldn't have been happier elsewhere. As far as his faith ... he did request a subscription to Magnificat for an early birthday present ...
Catie is completely different ... she wanted a small, more intimate setting and the Catholic schools have that with the benefit of ease of attending the sacraments and going to the Blessed Sacrament. When she visited Benedictine, the girls she hung with went to Adoration before they went out ... that's what she saw and experienced, which is why Benedictine is her first choice. They're adding a nursing major next year -- and she wants that + biochem so she can go to med school.
These are just 2 of our total 8 kids ... my 3 stepkids are non-Catholic and the other 3 are just dreaming about college at this point.
For us ... for us, we let the kids decide where they're going as it's their education ... we don't put any stipulations on where or what ... but they also pay the bulk of their education as we believe they need to OWN it. Joe hasn't been home since last Christmas as he can't afford it ... but he's happy and seems to be doing the good. He's an adult and needs to make those choices .... all we can do is pray!

ds is really thinking "engineering" so we are on the lookout too.
although Steubenville dropped it, their other sciences are quite strong, and their new science center is amazing.
we are also looking at Ave Maria, they are growing quite rapidly, and are making sciences quite strong.
U Dallas, Christendom, Thomas Aquinas, are not his thing at all.he was able to visit Belmont Abbey and Steubenville this past summer, although it was early, we were driving through both places so signed up for the full "tour"
he really likes the idea of a smallish school.
Bradley University here in Peoria has a SUPER strong sciences program, as well as Liberal arts, and a huge Catholic population and a well integrated Newman and Focus program.
they are in all of the dorms, have made huge headways with faculty and staff, the athletic director (father of 9!) and also head soccer coach and head basketball coach are very strong Catholics, (we were just on Today show for an amazing basketball game!!) and we are even friends with the head of the women's studies dept, she's not super crazy .....
it is expensive though, but they have a cool online expense calculator specifically tailored.
ok, I'm cutting myself off again!! can you tell we've got college on the brain here??

We can't afford a Catholic college and there are none nearby to even consider. My oldest two are attending college by (1) paying his way (2) TOPS and scholarship.
Kayleigh, my oldest dd, attends a secular institute. They have a wonderful Newman Center which she frequents and a fantastic priest (who is in contact w/ a good friend of hers who is in the seminary). She attends Mass there regularly and goes to Fr. Alan for counsel.
She also has a part-time job after school hours which keeps the temptation to go out and "party" at bay or...at least...gives her a good excuse to turn down those offers.
For us, this combination is working out very well.
Corey, my oldest son, works full time. I joke that he's too busy to get into trouble. For him, his Catholic faith is just what it is. He has a simple faith but it runs deep.
I guess you could say that a lot stems from the fact they are both still living at home. If that guides them over the next four years, that's good. They'll be older and wiser.
In the end, I pray, trust and hope that God showers them w/ as much mercy as He did on me when I was a young, naive, Catholic girl attending the same secular institution over 20 years ago.
