Here's a story about a cool study done by the Newman Society that shows that good Catholic colleges aren't all that much more expensive than other private colleges ... and they tend to have deeper pockets for financial aid/scholarships.
As an example, Mt St. Mary's posted an increase to their aid of $350,000 due to the current economic situation!

dh and I are both products of Franciscan University Steubenville. (BA, MA)
There is not a week that goes by that one of us does not THANK GOD that we received such an amazing life education!!! (even while still paying student loans, I might add, priceless!!!)

I love Franciscan. My oldest daughter went there and works now as an Admissions Counselor. I do worry, however, when I hear of some of her friends graduating with $80,000 to $100,000 in debt. How in the world do you ever overcome that? And what if your spouse has even half that much? I struggle with that as my second daughter is attending a state school with limited Catholicism. My oldest son is starting to look at colleges now and I know that he can't afford to attend Franciscan without acquiring a lot of debt. It is a tough choice.

I worked in Admissions for 3 years!!
Dh and I both basically put ourselves thorugh school- and beleive me it was/is tough. We worked SWOP jobs, and off campus for our living expenses, so that the Loans only went for pure education. Still we had about 40,000 debt in 1995, when he finished his Master's. (he worked between 20-40 hours per week while in school full time for that)
But going to a State school does not necessarily mean debt free either, in this day and age. I don;t know if it can be compared, anyway, so that it is "fair" to either education. I could say you get what you pay for with a secular education- maybe a good prof here or there, maybe some really damaging ones.
Newman Centers are AWESOME, along with the work of the FOCUS missionaries, etc. however, the culture of the campus still remains largely secular.
I guess much more than the actual class time education that dh and I received at Steubenville- was the out-of class time in Professors homes, and the Catholic Christian community that was modeled for us at basically every turn.
Because that was such a part of our everyday living, it was easier to put into practice once we established our own household- if this makes sense.
but I don't want to hijack the post or knock other schools.
I'd love to somehow save my kids the "pain" of being saddled with student loan debt, but wow, it sure matured us in many ways financially, recognizing needs VS wants, and helped us make very prudent decisions from day one.....
not to mention that I wholeheartedly feel the school deserved every penny of our money, I wonder if I would be resentful or disappointed as some of our friends are- who walked away with less debt from a state school but question much of their "education" in more ways than one???
lastly, dh works for the Catholic Church, and I have always stayed home, although picked up parttime here or there over the years. so if we can do it on a Church salary, most likely jsut about any grad can!!

I feel the need to represent for UD...isn't that how the kids say it these days? Although, my husband is a half and half. He did half his time at Franciscan but because they forgot to save a space for him to live, at the last minute he transferred to UD. I am not complaining!!!! God knew there was no way to get this Texas girl to cross the Red River so He had to get him down here somehow! 
I know that everyone's college experience is different but I found so much at UD. My faith, my husband  , my vocation, not to mention life-long, like-minded friends! Wouldn't trade that experience for the world!

there are some girls I know who recently attended/attend there- it is awesome! when was your dh at Franciscan?? and ahh, now with ALL of the new dorms, that never would have happened to him, so good timing, eh??

He was there as a freshman in Fall 1990 but took some time off during the next couple of years to work and earn tuition money. He transferred to UD in the Fall of 1994. My parents were generously able to pay for my first year at UD but we both had student loans (combined about $35,000) when we got married and that was with doing work study and other jobs.

Thanks for the UD update. My son is considering going there and he would be eligible for so much more in the way of scholarships than he is at Franciscan. The problem with Franciscan is that it is such a great Catholic University that so many go on and work for the church. It is hard to give to your Alma Mater when your making such a small salary. It just doesn't have the endowments that other schools have. And Mary, when I started homeschooling, I was on the young end and I am sure that I am older than you (considering I have a 22 year old). It is weird seeing you young ones post and know that I am almost old enough to be your mother!
BTW, my daughter was able to graduate from Franciscan with only a few loans. She worked while in school and she graduated in three years. It can be done but it is difficult.

I am looking at this thread as my son is opening the mail telling me that he has been offered a pretty generous scholarship from UD. A coincidence? Hmmmm. Now we have to wait and see if there is any financial aid. I feel so encouraged when I hear such positive things and meet so many impressive young grads.

My husband and I both graduated from Franciscan. My son attended also and now my daughter is going there. My other son went to Benedictine College in Kansas.
Then there is wyoming cathoic college which is very good also.

Keep posting, everyone!!!
Does anyone have any personal experience with Wyoming Catholic College? My son is interested, and they have sent him some very encouraging correspondence....he is not quite 16, but we are beginning to ponder these things.....when did your teens start to visit campuses? I am impressed with WCC, but it seems so remote.....it is funny, I grew up with horses, showed my horse in 4-H, etc...and my kids and dh are so city!! It would be great if at least ONE of my dc learns how to ride!! The equine part is mandatory at UCC.....I think that is very cool.

we are friends with Mark Randall, the new PR guy for Wyoming Catholic College. He is great to talk to, if you want to call him up and fire away any questions you might have.
I also wanted to mention John Paul the Great college in CA.
It is specializing in communications, media, gaming, broadcasting, etc.

Dear 4lads mom,
you can ask me anything you want! I'm here in Lander, my dh is a prof at WCC.
I will just say this (so I don't sound like I am tooting horns ), I think WCC is very appealing to boys bc of the outdoor program--not just horses, but field science (nature study), and the outdoor adventure program includes camping, hiking, rock climbing, fishing, skiing, etc. Time for these is built into the school schedule, so there can be balanced development of the whole person.
Ask away!

Don't forget Belmont Abbey in North Carolina (near Charlotte). My daughter will be heading there this Fall. The college is very friendly to homeschoolers and have opportunities for scholarships.
