No way I am going to be able to get the book by this weekend, but I am intrigued by the "White Table" tradition. Can someone who has the book or knows the tradition please spell it out for me so I can perhaps plan something for friday?

From searching around it looks like the symbols and their meaning can vary slightly from place to place which is interesting.
BTW, we just read another book that is good for Veterans Day and I hadn't realized until last night that it is the same author as The White Table. The book is Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot about the Berlin airdrops.
And our project on Flanders Fields has got us looking for other WWI picture books. I have requested this one - Christmas in the Trenches which looks good.
Other suggestions for good soldier or military picture books for Veteran's Day or in general?

The e-nature blog today talks about poppies - the Veteran's Day flower.
I'm looking for a pattern for paper poppies. Hopefully we'll make some today. Going to visit a cemetery later in the afternoon.

I forgot about the poppies connection. For my younger ones, Veteran's Day has more of a broad sweep of all soldiers who fought. We visited several cemeteries searching for Veteran gravestones. One was of Civil War soldiers from the 2nd Battle of Manassas.

That's neat! The oldest I've found here is Spanish-American War.
So not finding exactly what I wanted I modified the pattern I linked above and made our own. Here it the result. They were very easy.

The Poppy Lady: Moina Belle Michael and Her Tribute to Veterans (Barbara Walsh)
Great picture book. Tells the story of Moina Belle Michael and her service to veterans. I had heard bits of the story perviously when learning about poppies and there association with veterans and the link to "Flanders Fields" but the well crafted and beautifully illustrated story bring it to life in a fresh way. A great opportunity to introduce young readers to the story at anytime but especially at Veteran's Day. Good for covering WWI in picture books, too.
