Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Two books that I really enjoyed are Homeschooling Our Children, Unschooling Ourselves by Alison McKee and Learning at Home by Marty Layne. Alison McKee's book is especially good for giving you an idea of day-to-day life in an unschooling family. She also relates her struggles (such as trusting her children to learn what they needed to learn) and how she overcame them. Layne's book is organized by subject (math, writing, etc.), and she gives ideas for covering the subjects in a natural way with examples from her life with her four children. Her book is very good if you have younger children. Karen

I ended up buying the Millman book. It just has way too much stuff that I want to underline and come back to later! I am really enjoying this book. I have also been reading through John Holt's books. What Do I Do Monday? has tons of great ideas for implementing teachable moments with your kids. We've used it several times in the2.5 weeks since we started school.

Blessings,
Bets

Picked this up from the library after reading your recommendation. John Holt was an amazing man! Talk about ahead of his time. I could barely believe that he wrote this book in 1970. He actually wrote about school choice back then!

I read John Holt a few years ago but really didn't "get" him. I love the ideas in this book, especially in regard to writing. Sounds alot like Bravewriter. His chapter on grades & marking is amazing. After you've homeschooled for a few years (10 in our case), you find yourself shaking your head in agreement as you can relate to the classroom experience.

Thanks to everyone for all the great book suggestions.

Just popping in again to say that I'm really enjoying the Millman book.

Two other books that I highly recommend are:

"Keys to the Heart of Youth" which is about St. John Bosco's preventative system

"The Educational Philosophy of St. John Bosco"

The only way I was able to get them was through snail mail at Salesiana Publications

They probably seem a little odd listed on an unschooling booklist thread but I had to keep reminding myself that they are not specifically unschooling books as I was reading them! I'm assuming that some of you may be as surprised/delighted as I was.

I've read this one, and really found it both interesting and helpful. And not at all a long or difficult read.

Thanks for the suggestions.
