My original idea was that my kids would wear them for outings only. After talking it over with my husband, it's his (very wise) opinion that the kids should wear them every day since it helps them to get into the proper frame of mind for learning.
At least, that's what our family is planning. That might not work well for other families, of course.

Nissa, it's funny -- I was just thinking that these threads about school uniforms are reminding me of our discussions of the Robinson Curriculum. DH's are usually more enthusiastic about that, too! It's almost as if there are two sets of ideals at work:
Maternal homeschooling: "Everyone in comfy clothes, snuggled up with picture books and home-baked cookies, with lots of time to just chat"
Paternal homeschooling: "Everyone in uniforms, studying a structured curriculum, with no fooling around until the work is done"
It's an exaggeration, of course, but I think there's some truth in it. And I'd be inclined to say that there's a time and a place for both.

I think you are absolutely right. And after 10+ years of doing things my way, I think I can give his a trial. In the end, I think we'll come to a happy medium.
I have to admit that this uniform plan has given me the rather pleasant notion that there may not be any fuss about dressing in the mornings. And our morning silence can better remain intact until after morning offering. How I cherish that 8-8 quiet.
Blissful.
Blessings,

This is a brilliant synopsis! And it's true here!

Hmm, I'd have to agree. My husband was a teeny bit disappointed that I wasn't insisting on them wearing uniforms every day!

do you think we bristle as homeschoolers (in general) at the notion of a "uniform" because then it signifies (shallowly, I think) "school at home" and we tend to react against that as homeschool moms?

Lisa I do think that might be true. My 14 year old son about had a heart attack when I mentioned the discussion here on uniforms. He insists that one of the great perks of hsing is doing math in your jammies!

oh i can just imagine the comments I think already having enough children to elicit comments about being "good Catholics" and if even one of my girls wears a cute plaid skirt I hear about the "Catholic school uniform" look.. it just gets tiring to always have the comments.. we do coordinate for special things (Easter, Christmas, etc) and I've been known to put matching bright colored shirts on them all (get the plain shirts in bright colors for $2-2.50 each) for keeping an eye on them.. but I'm not sure I could handle graciously the comments that matching outfits everytime we left the house would attract.
Maybe it's me, or maybe it's that we live in a small town.. I love the idea.. and love the way the kids look.. but not that much.

see, and for us, it is the opposite. we go TOTALLY unnoticed if we are out and about in uniform. there are so many Catholic schools here, plus even many of the public schools have a khaki and white or navy "dress code"
and with everyone on different school day schedules (even among the local Catholic schools they have different days off!!) we just kind of blend in (which I like)
if we were to venture out in sweats, etc THEN the big family/homeschooing family comments would start up!!!

PS- I used to dress more for being out and about, but again, now I appreciate it for what it does to our home life, and honestly, we are out and about so much once sports practices start up in the late afternoon/sats that I tend to end up running my errands with kids (in athletic attire ) to conserve on gas, etc
JodieLyn, I'm a born and raised Oregonian, and I DO think Catholics are a bit fewer and farther between out your way!!!

We are the type that dont dress up until we are getting ready to leave. So, if we arent supposed to leave til 3pm, we'll be in our pj's till then. If you drop by the house unanounced, you'll find us all in our pj's. We also get back in our house clothes when we get home. This is the way dh and I grew up.
I did speak with him about this though. He said if i want to, we can give it a try this year. I showed my girls the uniforms online and they were excited about it. I'll get them one dress each and maybe 1-2 shirts. Now i guess i have to find some kind of comfortable *uniform* instead of pj's.

Does anyone know where you can get school uniform skirts that are long? I noticed one link Nissa provided (Ez2buy school uniforms) had some long ones but it says they have side slits. Anyone have any of these and know if they come up very high?

Lisa,
I ordered just one to check quality and fit. It was shipped today, so I'll let you know when it comes in. I'm guessing that the slits are small walking slits, no higher than the knees. But again, I'll be able to tell you for sure when it arrives.
Blessings,

I just checked and french toast has long skirts that have a "kick pleat" instead of slits. They are well-priced too.

Thank you so much for this thread. I just bought a few polos from Target but they didnt have jumpers, just skirts. I think jumpers will be more comfortable for them plus the skirts were too big, even when i adjusted the elastic waist. The girls were excited. I think i'll have to order jumpers from walmart. This will be fun and new to try out this year.

The package has just arrived from EZ2BuySchoolUniforms. I ordered the long modest skirt with side slits. It was supposed to come mid-calf, but we're petite folk here and it's just about floor length. The slits come below the knee.
The fabric is very heavy-duty, seaming is very strong and it will probably stand up to wash after wash after wash. It's Cherokee brand, if that means anything to you. The zip is sewn in well, but a little lightweight, and the button could be sewn on a little better for my taste (but I'm a pretty picky seamstress). The buttonhole is slightly under-finished, I'd just snip out the stray whiskers so that the button doesn't get tangled.
All in all, though a good value for around $20. The shipping was very quick, and customer service, I felt was very good.
I think that we're going to try a knee-length skirt since we're so darned short. It'll probably fall below the knee on us. Perfect!
Blessings,

I ordered 2 jumpers off of ebay. The next day, a friend from church who knew we were considering Catholic School (30 miles away!) gave me a garbage bag full of uniform pieces, so we are set.
Our town has a Christian school that has a red/white/blue uniform system that only goes to 1st grade, so many people just give the uniforms away at that point.
Since we have enough, the girls will wear them M-TH, Friday is free dress day. Wed is field trip day. The 3 littles (2 of mine and 1 daycare child) will all wear matching t-shirts on field trip day.

I love the uniform idea. It eliminates "Mooooommm, I don't have anything to wear!"
I went to Catholic grade school and high school. For grade school we had the plaid jumper, and in 7 & 8th grade the girls transitioned to the plaid skirt.
In my all girl high school we wore a solid color, scoop neck, sleeveless black jumper. It had a pleated skirt that started around our hips and went to well below our knees. If any of the nuns thought your skirt was too long, you had to kneel on the floor - and your hem had better be touching the floor. We were allowed to wear any solid color shirt under the jumper, but it had to have sleeves and a collar. Oh, and we wore black and white saddle shoes, with black or white socks or tights.

Oh, I am late to this.
When my children were in our old parish school they wore Dennis uniforms and the quality was well worth the money. If you look on Ebay you can find Dennis uniforms in the children's clothing section.
