I usually sit down and make a list of goals that each child needs to accomplish for the next yr. Then I look at what books I want us to read and make a list of those. That's it for pre planning. We are unschooly in that way. I usually have a teacher planner that I fill in with what we have done for the day rather than plan things out.

I find that if pointed in right direction my kids will teach themselves or come to me with topics they want to learn. If I see that we are lacking in a particular area then I will plan out a unit for that subject. The exception is math. I typically have a math book/wkbk set for each yr.

Sigh...I spend a lot of time planning, and it is *very* hard...especially this year with 3 kids 5 and under. Baby is very mommy attached, too, which is cute except when I am trying to use the computer. I have taken to slinging him and writing notes in notebooks or any loose piece of paper around while standing at the kitchen counter! NOT the best way to plan, but I don't know what else to do. Sometimes I stay up very late to try to get some planning time in (between 10 and midnight) because I tend to be more of a nightowl than an early bird. The high school syllabi take the longest to write.

Someone asked about a planner...I really like the FIAR one, even though we aren't using FIAR exclusively. I love being able to print pages as I need them. Last year I tentatively planned what I wanted to cover for the year and then planned for shorter intervals throughout the schoolyear. It worked ok, but I don't want to have to spend time every weekend or two planning again throughout the year so I'm trying to do more this year...
