Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

St. Valentine's Day Tea

Lots of fun treat and tea party type of foods.
I wasn't sure if I should resurrect the old Valentine's tea thread or add what we did here. I decided on here, I hope that's okay!

A friend and I planned a St. Valentine's tea, but we had to cancel due to sickness. However, I had some ideas that others may be interested in and can use next year, for any meal.

I took most of my ideas from the Catholic Mosiac St. Valentine book.

We set the table with a yellow tablecloth and had yellow crocus-like flowers. (Yellow crocuses are associated with St.Valentine.) It was lovely, and a refreshing change from the usual red and pink. Plus, yellow flowers were cheaper than the typical Valentine colors Crafting your own crocuses would be easy to do, and they would last year to year. Finding live yellow crocuses in mid-Feb. is a challenge to say the least!

We had a red runner (from our Christmas decorations *shhhhh!* ) under the flowers, since St. Valentine was a martyr.

We served chocolate in some form, of course. Then I peeled lots of mandarin oranges, plentiful this time of year, to remind us of the petals of a crocus. I also put some dates, figs and honey cakes on the table, since St. Valentine was an early-A.D. Roman, and those were typical dessert foods for that time and place.

For a fun activity, I had planned to make simple pine cone birdfeeders; in Chaucer's time Europeans believed Feb. 14 was the day birds choose their mates.

Since St. Valentine was a prisoner, Stef and I brainstormed about ways to bless prisoners on that day. ("I was a prisoner, and you visisted me...") Next year, I plan to contact a prison chaplain and ask what we can do to minister to inmates.

HTH for next year!

Oh my, Bethany- your Valentine's Tea sounds so lovely. So many clever additions. I love the idea of crocuses for decoration. I have read that in the book but wouldn't have thought to seek them out.

That is a great idea. I wonder if it couldn't just be as simple as making Valentine's cards for the prisoners. I'll bet that would be appreciated.

Thank you Mary! My friend and I didn't really plan anything til the night before, so it was mostly pulled together the next morning, with a quick trip to the grocery and things we had on hand. Then we had to cancel. It's never convenient or fun to be sick!

But the house was lovely for dh when he got home.
