Just thought you'd enjoy seeing Margot's latest news -- just scroll down to the knitting book! Seeing it in print, is VERY exciting for me.

My goodness Mary! What you won't do to get me to learn to knit!!!! How can I resist the combination of craft and read-aloud? It really sounds like fun!
I have to tell you, my daughter was very sad the other day because she said she wanted to learn how to knit but she knew I couldn't teach her. So I guess I better get busy fixing that!

Wonderful, Mary!
For several months now (since the 4Real Conference where I saw your lovely gift basket for the raffle and I tried to win it even though I know nothing about knitting), you've stirred in me the desire to learn how to knit, Mary. I am determined to pick up knitting this Christmas! My grandmother has supplies, though she has no time to teach me nor can her hands still knit (very deformed from arthritis). Nicholas and I are going to learn together when we go visit her, though. :)

Thanks guys for your warm acknowledgements. For those who want to learn (or improve), I must say the best book is the Melanie Falick book (most libraries have it if you want to test-drive before buying), Kids Knitting: Projects for Kids of All Ages. It'll help immensely .... and I'm usually 'round about here to "e-coach" if needed

Mary, you are so generous to offer your assistance. I know I have seen that one in my library so I guess I really have no excuse now!

Mary, How exciting! I was waffling on the knitting book you recommended. I'm glad to have your recommendation. I set as a goal to learn this year. There are just so many things I want to do and knitting seems the perfect vehicle to accomplish those things. I'm thrilled to learn, and then look forward to your book! Isn't it exciting to see your ideas in the pages of a book! Oh, how yummy! More new books!

Wow, that's brilliant Mary - congratulations! So wonderful to have a talent to share so generously with others for their enjoyment and we need more of those skills encouraged and cultivated (being one of the deprived ones who can't knit or sew and battle with baking well... ) I KNOW how important these mother-culture skills are!

Ha Ha! Not only does my library carry it, but I checked it out last month (even though I have no knitting needles... I was sorely tempted to pull out a couple of pencils...Instead I just drooled over the cute pictures). I'll recheck it when I come home from Grandma's. Thanks, Mary!!

WAY cool, Mary........my knitters are drooling here.......and can't wait.
Matilda........my kids just asked every one else to teach them how to knit .........they learned a long time ago: mama can be fun, and she likes to travel, and makes history come alive.......BUT, she cannot knit, crochet, sew very well, do hair........and other disappointing things.... ah, well...........I CAN entertain them with my inadequcies

Janette -- chopsticks and sharpened/oiled dowels work too ... just about anything with a bit of a point will work and can be fun to play with ....Falick has directions in her book for making your own needles; we did this last year when I taught my littles to knit and they loved the experience!

Mary, we probably will make our own needles since it looks fun. Some part of me wants to "start" with my Grandma's needles, though.

Mary,
I don't knit but my girls do a little with one of the godmothers who takes my place at their side and my adopted daughter Julie is quite good at it.
I just wanted to say that I LOVE the title: Great Yarns for the Close-Knit Family
That is so cool!

Thanks -- but that was a bit of Divine inspiration -- I had been calling it "Sittin' and Knittin' " but knew that wasn't good enough ....
