Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have a 12-13 yo dd who is an avid reader. I proof read books and she snuggles up and reads them either next to me, or with the cat on her lap.

Why, yes, I do have some suggestions. I listed a few in this thread.

jenngm wrote:
St. Nicholas books: These are larger collections that you could read many different stories
::St. Nicholas: The Wonder Worker by Anne E. Neuberger
::The Real St. Nicholas: Tales of Generosity and Hope from around the World

In addition:

I haven't read it, but really want to this Christmas:
The True Saint Nicholas: Why He Matters to Christmas by William Bennett

Also keep any eye out for this OOP book
The Twenty Miracles of Saint Nicholas by Bernarda Bryson

An older book first printed in 1909, but there are facsimiles available (pricey, look for cheaper used) The Story of Santa Klaus: Told for Children of All Ages from Six to Sixty by William S. Walsh

If you are looking for Christmas Anna Angel, be sure to try and find the edition illustrated by Kate Seredy. It was a Caldecott Honor Book and the lovely folksy illustrations really add a special touch. There are other editions that are not illustrated or are poorly illustrated. This book is OP, but might be in a library (that hasn't thrown out all of its old books)

In Erin's list is the book Starlight in Tourrone...which I am pre-reading right now and like it A LOT! It's a very sweet story! Not finished yet, but wanted to mention it here before I forget!

Also, my girls are reading The True Gift, by Patricia MacLauchlan.

Lily and her younger brother go to their grandparents' farm for Christmas, as always. This year something is different; White Cow is the only animal in the field. Liam, certain that she is lonely, sacrifices his beloved books to buy her a calf companion, and Lily overcomes her fear of the large animal. The simple, elegant prose tells a warm family story with a classic holiday theme."

I have one just starting to read this also - glad to see it mentioned here as it is new.

CurrClick has 35 Christmas Stories for All Ages for $3.00 now.

35 wonderful stories about Christmas for all ages. Part of BrandenburgStudies "restored" out-of-print books for homeschooling and entertainment.

There are 219 pages and some stories that I've never heard of.

We're on a Lois Lenski trail, and our library had her Lois Lenski's Christmas Stories.

Nice Little review here.

some good books for kids whose reading level is above their maturity level are the nature books by Thornton Burgess. Some titles are the Burgess Bird Book for Children and Mother West Wind. These are classics, your library should have some of his books.

From the St. Lucia thread:

JennGM wrote:
I have another book that covers St. Lucia's Day celebrated in America -- Elin's Amerika by Marguerite de Angeli. This is the story of Elin, who came to live in the Swedish colony in the 1600s in America. The end has a delightful rendition of Lucia Dagen, plus the Christmas celebration. The illustrations, especially of Elin as the Lucia Bride are just stunning and so worth it!

So it's indirectly about St. Lucy, but about the Santa Lucia traditions from Sweden.

This is a wonderful book!

Has anyone read The Birds Christmas Carol? It looks good and you can see the first 20 pages or so on Yesterday's Classics page.

Yes, I have - as a girl. Reminds me that I've never read it since. Maybe it's all the boys in the house.... Anyway, I remember it being good, but sad. It's short - a quick read. Should try to throw it in the mix this year.

It's very good, but as Mary says, you'll need the Kleenex. Sort of a short easy chapter book along the lines of Elin's Amerika by Angeli. Your girls would love it, and the older edition, though edited more sparingly than a picture book, has beautiful illustrations. I think the Yesterday's Classics would have them (in black and white of course.)

My oldest enjoyed The Christmas Tree by Julie Salamon last year. It was a simple and quick read for her.

We also liked The Quiet Little Woman by Louisa May Alcott (short stories).

And earlier this year I found a used copy of the Fireside Book of Christmas Stories which I'm very excited to use this year. It has some wonderful short stories including The Birds Christmas Carol, and authors like Dickens, Alcott, de la Mare, Garland, Pyle, Hughes, van Dyke, H. Burnett...I really like that the stories are placed into four sections Christmas is... Christ, Santa Claus, Dickens, and Home.

My 10YO DS and I have been reading this book over the past few weeks - almost finished. It's a great book!! Above his reading level for independent reading, for sure, but he and I have really enjoyed getting to know the history of St. Nicholas and some of the fables, too. It has really brought St. Nicholas alive for both of us.

One of the results from my search on my library website was , The Birds' Gift: A Ukrainina Easter Story. I just thought it looked like it was worth mentioning.
So anyway back to advent
Love the lists here.

Bump!

Happy Reading, everyone! We are revisiting some of our favs and have a couple new ones too!

We are starting Elin's Amerika and A Tree for Peter.

And, of course, everyone is fighting over The Christmas Doll and The Birds' Christmas Carol.

Since, we've moved, our library here doesn't have a few of the ones we read every year, so I'm going to have to be on the lookout for used copies of various ones from this thread. HOW ON EARTH COULD WE GO WITHOUT????

Please add any new ones you've found!

The Lion in the Box was a new read for us this year. Marguerite de Angeli. We loved it!
