About the worry that "it all depends on you" -- I certainly stay awake worrying about that sometimes.
There's another way to look at it though. #1 Education DOES depend a lot on the parent, no matter which way you cut it, no matter where the kids go to school -- look at all the kids you know and all their parents. Don't you see patterns? There is just no way around it. Parents are a huge influence on their kids.
The other thing to think of is that homeschooling takes some of the factors that are out of your control and remove them from the picture. Sometimes kids flounder in school settings because the educational fit is not a good one. I have heard tons of stories of parents who have taken their kids out of school because it was harder to make the school work for the kid than it would be to simply take over.
Indeed, that was one of my reasons, though not a giant one, for taking my kids out of school.
So that casts the "burden of responsibility" in a positive light, perhaps -- responsibility makes things a lot easier in some ways (even when it doesn't seem like it).

Well, this is our 12th year of homeschooling and I've felt all these pangs of worry and concern, "gapitis",fingernails chewed to the nub, am-I-ruining-their-future-self-doubts, the works. So it is with great pleasure that I can report that my ds, hsed all the way thru by his very disorganized mother...
JUST GOT ACCEPTED INTO COLLEGE! Woohoo! I feel like I just gave birth!
I have more, deeper reflections on this process but I have a little one dripping wet, just out of the tub, needing attention. Until then, hang tough, Natalie, it CAN BE DONE!
