I'm from Germany and had a "Schultuete" when I entered school. My "Schultuete" had school supplies, a necklace, and some candy in it.
What kind of recipe are you thinking of?

Hi Eva!
Well, I splurged on a very cute cookie mold from
House on the Hill .I hope to make springerle cookies. I've tried in the past and my molds are a little too big. This new mold is a little over an inch in size with a picture of an apple tree and apples falling into a barrel. I think it will make a fun first day of school cookie.
I thought this Kuchen recipe looked good as well.

The Kuchen recipe reminds me of the cakes my mother makes. It looks good. Springerle to me are a Christmas treat. Your mold looks very cute. Do you have a special recipe you're using?

September is springerle month to me. A few years ago, I was given a Marian springerle mold and I make the cookies for my son's birthday in September. (He has a Marian feast day.) I bought an angel one for my other son whose birthday falls upon the feast of the Archangels.
I haven't mastered the technique but I have fun trying.
I also have a St. Nicholas mold. I burnt those last year.
I'm hoping the smaller mold will yield a better result. I might try the springerle recipe from the top German recipe link. This recipe uses anise. I wonder if my children will like that flavor. Maybe I should substitute almond?

Don't leave the anise out! That is part of all Springerle. Here are the traditional ingredients:
eggs, powdered sugar, lemon peel, rum, flour, anise (seeds), salt of hartshorn
Did you let the Springerle dry over night before you baked them?

Do you have a recipe Eva? I'll try it out.
Yes, I have left them out to dry overnight. This helped to maintain the shape tremendously.

Our neighbors made homemade Schultuete as a gift for us a few years ago on the first day of school. It was a nice surprise!

I was looking at Playmobil today and they had two little school children holding their schultuetes - I almost bought the set as it was very cheap, but I was already planning to buy 4 of the little sets, and so I was restrained, but ever since I have regretted not buying them - which is madness as we have ay least a dozen playmobil children as it is!

Helen, I just got back from a vacation. I do have a recipe, but I'll have to look it up and translate it! I'll post it in a few days. First we need to unpack.

You know I saw a paper cone filled with candy at this local shop here the other day (I'm in Wales). How cool!

Isn't that fun!!
Thanks Eva for thinking of me. I used the recipe I linked to earlier and the children loved it. (I even included the anise. ) I wasn't sure if our cookies tasted authentic or not but the kids didn't mind.
We hosted a little first day of school party with a German theme. It was fun. We had a pinata and water balloon toss. We wore dresses with aprons. The children made or brought their Schuel...I should post pictures. I meant to ... but life is running faster than blogging.
Thanks everyone for a fun thread.

Thank you so much for this idea! They were a big hit with my two boys. I bought fresh flowers for the table, and the Schultuete were stuffed with school supplies and few fun things. This really started our first week off on a great note, and we have been having a great time ever since.
This will definitely be a tradition around here.

Sorry, for the long delay, but I've been very busy and don't always have access to a computer. I looked at my German recipe and thought about translating it, but that would have been quite a chore. So I found a very similar recipe online in English. Here is the link. It's the recipe by Olli Leeb. You can order hartshorn here. Happy baking!

Thanks for the links Eva
The recipe I used for my small molds worked fine. I tried to make more springerle for the Feast of the Guardian Angels and the recipe tasted horrid on a big cookie.
Next time I think I need to use hartshorn.
Thanks for your help.
