Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My youngest is 5 and wants to do whatever her older sister and brother are doing. So she'll just sit in on their activities. We classically unschool (there, I said it, it must be true)and she has already shown a lot of her independent mindedness--she has been trying to teach herself to read--so I think I will have to incorporate some "stealth" teaching as I did with her brother.
Ann, I had to laugh about your backward writing lefty! I am a lefty that used to write backwards! And I had a lot of difficulty teaching my right handed son to write!

Peace and Laughter,

My K'er will be five. She turns six in December. Her speech is behind so we will hopefully be working on that with a therapist. We follow MODG but substitute with Singapore Math. I just LOVE the Bible book they make with their narrations and drawings. Also, for spelling/reading we will substitute 100 EZ Lessons with Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself.

So I guess I'm substituting half of what's recommended?!

Blessings,
Lillian

My K will be 4 yrs., 10 months old in September. We will be following the MODG K Syllabus, but she will also do some things with her older sister who is in 2nd grade. I figured they can both do Art, Science, and History together, and I also have The Frances Guide (literature based program by Valerie Bendt that uses the series of Frances the Badger books) that I have been wanting to try, so we might do some activities from that. Basically, I will just let her lead the way and do what she can, leaving what she can't for another school year.

OK, kinda a side question from your post. Do you mind sharing where and what you are getting for your son's dress-up clothes? My son loves to role-play and imagine it is just hard to find things for a boy.

Thank you for any ideas,

Hi Michele,

I did a google, and came up with a few places. However, I still am not finding something that looks any different than the cheap vinyl ones that he has had and that fall apart from their frequent use. My ds basically wants a *real* firefighter outfit and a *real* policeman uniform. I don't think he's gonna get that!

This site at least looks like the clothes will last...

Let me know if you find something very real looking, and I will do the same!

Warmly,
Christy

Here's another option:
Flights of Fancy

I have four of these costumes, the Jesuit cassock and cincture, Mother Teresa, the Captain jacket, and the Lydia set.

They are very well made and hold up well to heavy play and frequent washings. I am a seamstress myself so I'm pretty picky about anything sewn.

No policeman or firefighter but you could ask. I THINK she may take requests.

I don't know the owner but I am told she is a Christian woman who is friendly to Catholics (well obviously since some of her costumes are quite Catholic!)

God bless,

My Ks just turned 5 on 6-15. I think they will do great this year, but I have to try not to put too much pressure on reading. In our area it seems that all Ks are reading by the end of the school year. I am not so sure they will be. I also try to remember that my other kids were several months older when they went through K/

We have purchased costumes from buycostumes.com. A little pricey, but my brother used to work there and got a discount. Their costumes are nice - and I know they have a kids' policeman and firefighter costume. They also sell props. They also have clearance sales and you can find good deals sometimes through that.

My K was 5 in February. She is very eager to begin "school" like her older siblings. I am doing a major restructure of my whole homeschooling vision, in truth and feel conflicted as to what to do with my Kindergartener. She desperately wants to do school and I am looking for any and all ways to simpify my school days and make more space in our days. I have a tendency towards dilletantism and over-do....in many areas. I have done WAY too much with K in the past. So, this year, I **think** I will use:

MCP K for math, plus some Montessori stuff ( I own RightStart Level A....but, everything is repeated in Level B and I just don't need another child to spend an hour with doing math .

HWT for printing.

CHC's Little Stories for Little Folks

Lots and lots of books and I will have to make this a real priority. My busy-ness tends to get in the way of what I know is truly important. She loves being read to. I just want to do lots more of this than I have this past year.

HWT printing

Moira Farrel's CGS manuals.

Kathleen

My eldest is our K and she will be 6 in December. She's also our first homeschooler. We started pre-k this past year as our "trial" year and we plan to continue pretty much the same stuff:

CHC's LSLF with BOB books and other readers that interest her from the library; BFIAR and FIAR loosely

Singapore math earlybird 1b, 2a and 2b, with their popular tales and nursery rhymes set

HWT K level

Trying out the OLVS Chats with God's Little Ones as framework (Image of God was only mildly successful last year) plus continue with Catholic Mosaic and Moira's first album

Some homemade Montessori stuff to supplement math and reading

Nature study (haven't tried this yet)

We do a Filipino subject that covers language, culture, and history using our homemade readers, etc. She'll also attend a 2-hour weekly Filipino school with other kids (which I am teaching!)

This looks like a done deal but I'm not committing until after I attend the 4Real conference in August. I'm sure I'll get plenty of inspiration and ideas then!

I found another site for dress-up possibilities. I haven't bought any of these so I can not account for quality or service.

SensoryEdge - Costumes

Thanks for sharing your sources and reviews, ladies!

My K is turning 5 this month (sigh) She is our third HSer. I am planning on a lot of family centered activities with the Catholic Mosaic, Read your Way through History ( with all) and she will be doing some Phonics practice, letter writing, lots of hands on math activities, movement CDs, and lots of pretend play. ( we too love dress ups!)

My youngest will start K this fall. He is 5, going on 6 in December. He has PDD-NOS, which basically means he is delayed in some ways and has a hard time with concentration. I am still trying to figure out what is the best approach for him. Leaning towards the gentle and creative spirit of Oak Meadow at present ...

Thinking ...

LOTS of reading together (and working on his attention span, sitting time) ...

LOTS of simple crafts and art experiences with natural paint, beeswax crayons, plant-dyed colored pencils, homemade playdough ...

LOTS of nature time - fresh air and running around outside as well as walking nicely together and taking time to observe. A *simple* nature notebook and nature shelf. Puppet stories about animals and the woods ...

Some number work with manipulatives (maybe - they tend to get tossed about) or perhaps some little worksheets, keeping collections of things, sorting and counting games ...

Some letter work with refrigerator letters, Fridge Phonics, ABC books ... work on narrations (at his speed) and let him make drawings to go along ...

Time spent with family and in the community, learning who people are and how things work ... little maps, driving tours, excursions and photo albums ...

Learning to sit and play simple games ...

Saying simple poems and prayers together (in hopes of starting some memorization) ...

Classical music in the background ... he still doesn't tolerate singing very well ...

Working on life skills (which don't come as easily for him) and helping at home ...

That's all I have for now ... I'll be concentrating more on his plan later in the week (after I get the ed. plan off to the school system).

My K'er will be 5 on Aug 2nd. She has "learned" a lot through osmosis too, and is eager to "do school" with me.

I'll be following MODG as far as schedule, but will do Math U See Primer, and Bob books instead of Golden step ahead books and 100 EZ Lessons... But I will do the Harp and Laurel Wreath and Bible stories. And a bit of handwriting as well....

I hope that's enough???

My K'er will be 6 in October.

Handwriting- We are going to finish up Handwriting Without Tears Letters and Numbers for Me, and then I am going to custom make some copywork pages for him (I bought the HWOT font).

Math- Righstart finishing level A and moving to Level B, if appropriate (we'll see when the time comes)

Unit Studies-- FIAR Volume III and a few from Volume I; also adding lots of unit studies from Homeschool Share and Evan Moore's Fairy Tale Pockets

I don't have a plan for reading yet...basically, we're going to go back over basic phonics rules and ds will keep read simple books to me.

Other--
Sign Language (learning signs with Bible verses)
Spanish (Usborne/Teach Me Spanish.../My friend also gave me Hooked on Spanish Level 1)
Peter and the Wolf (learning the instruments)
Dad pretty much handles Bible

What's my son interested in? (specifically that we are going to learn about this year)
Sign Language
Dinosaurs
Pirates
Cowboys (we'll be doing unit studies on Billy and Blaze and Armadillo Rodeo)
Peter and the Wolf (he LOVES it...I can't wait to use it as a teaching tool)
Simple Machines
Beatrix Potter (he loves her!)
Fairy Tales
Dental Health & Germs
Maple Syrup
a few of his favorite books I've chosen to do unit studies with: Harry the Dirty Dog, Berlioz the Bear, Joseph Had a Little Overcoat, and The Story of Little Babaji

Can you tell I've spent the last week planning?

Ds turned 5 in May so according to the British school system this should be his 2nd year of formal schooling... Ahem. I'm not forcing things, just continuing what has worked well this year --

-plenty of read-alouds (tagging along with big sister)
-more gentle phonics (Montessori moveable alphabet); he knows all the letters but isn't too keen to blend them himself
-more steady progress through Oxford Reading Tree readers (I'm trying, mostly successfully, not to compare his rate of progress with his big sister)
-Catholic Mosaic
-hands-on science with Usborne science books
-maths using Schofield and Sims, moving at some point to Singapore Maths 'My Pals are Here'
-nature walks

Gosh, that sounds like a lot... Mostly, I plan for him to continue having fun!

Hi Ya,
My K turned 5 in May. What will he be up too? Playing around a lot
As for formal stuff, he wants to read. I've been using 100ez lessons on him and he likes it and is gaining quickly on his 7yr ds who isn't really reading (she is probably going to spell to read). The main thing he needs this year is fine motor work... I'm using HWT for him, tracing templates, and mazes to help him.
I'm also letting him tag along with his sister 7yrs for his math and religion. He is currently making books about knights (mom making drawings ds coloring, he narrates to me I write...)
I keep trying to do FIAR because I think he and his sister 7yrs will enjoy the activities but with all the other work to get through (especially ds9) I'm just a little crispy by noon

There is only so much K you can do when everyone else needs mama too...
