Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My mother-in-law, and my mom have both given me the task of shopping for our 6 kids, ages 4-17. Today is the day my mom has set aside to take her shopping, but she only shops at Walmart and Toys-R-Us

My kids don't need any toys. They don't even play with them. Do you have any Charlotte Mason type gifts I can pick for them. They've given me the budget of $20 a child.

I am very blessed to be able to pick what they get instead of them giving my girls Barbies and such. Any advice would be appreciated.

God bless.

I shopped for my mom's gifts to my kids too. I got them these terrific kid kits from Donna Marie's Usborne Books. There is something fun for everyone there. I bet you still have time to order them before Christmas.

I love these! Thank you. I'll order these with the money my other-in-law gave me. Hopefully I can find something with my mom today

Toys R Us has a nice selection of Melissa and Doug products for the littles:puzzles, blocks, etc. I love those.
They have sporting goods like bike helmets, scooters, soccer balls, etc.
They also carry DVD's and music, and video games if you do those.
If your Mom wanted to combine gifts they have things like an electric keyboard she could get for all of the kids together.
Walmart also has all those things, too. Plus they sometimes have some nice stuff in the crafts department, like kits and things (latch-hook, knitting, sewing, etc), or just supplies for hobbies they might already have.
Sometimes I shop in the hardware dept for my boys. Get them tools, etc to fiddle with, rope of various sizes.
Camping gear goes over well here. Flashlights, pocket knives, compass, canteen.
Hope that helps some.

When you're limited to chain stores some nice ideas might be binoculars, guide books, bird feeders, supplies for teatime, backpacks, sporting goods or craft supplies. We really appreciate being able to pool the money from grandparents for a larger gift that we usually couldn't afford otherwise. The grandmothers on both sides of our family give money and ask us to shop, and it has been a thoughtful way to handle gift-giving. It helps a lot if the children will be shopping with you to prepare them ahead of time with ideas of approved items they can choose from (a list can be helpful)...otherwise the unlimited choices can be too much, for young and old alike.

Ruth, those darling little boys of your might really dig something from the sporting goods department at Wal-Mart. We hit that department heavy for our boys. Some favorites have been: a coleman latern, canteens, folding shovel, binoculars, etc...

Here are some of our ideas but they don't work well if you're limited to chain stores.

We're blessed to live close to the Kennedy Center so my parents get the kids' tickets for children's plays or child geared performances of the National Symphony Orchestra. They've also given them certificates for swimming lessons in the past which has been a blessing to all of us! In the past they've given them a membership to the National Zoo. This year I've asked for a family membership to the Baltimore National Aquarium.

What about board games or card games? They seemed to be on sale quite often this time of year at Toys R Us.

Hope you find some great gifts!

Books on tape, birdhouse kits, movies, science kits from SK, blank books, good quality colored pencils, gardening tools...

Thank you for all of your advice. I ended up in the Science section at Toys-R-Us and I couldn't believe my eyes. I never get to go there since it's so far away and I hate shopping. The kids are going to have such a great time I need to get out more often.
