Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone know how to publish pictures on your blog that are copy protected? I've been repeatedly seeing some of the photographs from my blog on different blogs that I am not familiar with and it kind of freaks me out because I put pictures of my children on my blog and don't want them copy and pasted around cyber space.

Like many of you, I've already put a little makeshift copyright note on my sidebar, but that really doesn't do anything. Am I just being paranoid? I absolutely love it when we all link to one another in our little blogging world. Being linked in the 4 Real blogs makes me smile from ear to ear! But it makes me feel strange to see my pictures on other sites that I'm not familiar with. It kind of feels like my privacy has been invaded (someone else is publishing not only my thoughts, but images from my home and I don't even know them and they have not contacted me to ask if it is alright).

Do I just need to get over it and realize that this is just part of blogging publically? What do you guys do?

Katherine, contact the person that owns the website and ask them to take it down (or, if you're okay with them publishing the picture, ask them to link back to you and credit you for the pic -- it's the least they can do). usually people ask me if they can "borrow" my pics. but if someone uses the pics without asking i usually get on their case to take it down immediately. if they won't listen you can contact their hosting and file a report. the only thing is that free hosters like blogger have a disclaimer about not being responsible for bloggers' content. you can also put a CC (creative commons) license on your blog, although even that sometimes isn't enough to deter copyright violators.

once i had to resort to taking down the picture itself so they can't hotlink to it, then uploaded it under a differnt name.

and yes, unfortunately it's almost a normal part of blogging. the copyright laws are still murky on this which is why there's no one to really 'crack down' on offenders.

Thanks for your input Stef. My huband talked about putting a watermark through Photoshop on all the pictures that I post, but what a hassle!

I also wanted to clarify something. I got a message from someone who misunderstood my issue and was worried that sending my blog link was a violation of copyright or privacy. Please, please don't think that! I wanted to go ahead and clarify my original post so no one else will be confused by my venting.

The problem that I had, and that Stef addressed, is that someone saved a picture on my blog (actually the whole series of O Antiphon House pictures) and posted them on their blog as if it were their project. No linking back to me. The whole post made it appear that it was their project, their idea and in their home. So my pictures, my ideas and my time were taken without any permission or credit given to the original source. Absolutely no one on this board is part of the problem in this situation.

For those of you who have linked me or sent out my link to others, I am thankful and humbled that you think my ideas are worth sharing.

Amazing what people will do!

I am curious -- how did you find the pictures that the person had posted as their own? I have always wondered if anyone had done that with some pictures of my kids that were on the web for a while.

Katherine, this is terrible! How did you find out that they had done this? I have never thought to check and see if my photos are used anywhere.

I noticed at a craft blog I read, she has a statement like this:

"You are welcome to link to something you find here. However, please do not take content or photographs to use on your own website, blog or other publication without my permission. You can contact me by email at ****@email.com. Thank you!"

It probably won't stop people from doing it, but at least you've asked.

This gives me the eebie-jeebies. Katherine, welcome to the world of internet theft! I can google my name, find columns I wrote years ago, on sites I've never heard of, posted without my knowledge or consent. Usually, they do attribute to me, though. It always makes me wonder what else is out there and I don't know about it.Pictures would definitely bother me!

Jen and Katherine, here's a helpful site:

Copyscape

I don't know if this will reassure you but in my 8 years of publishing on the net I have yet to find my kids' pictures on someone else's site. Usually it's the "general", e.g., pictures of places, plants, food, etc. that some think of as "public domain" and assume they're free to use it in whatever way they like. And yes, your writing. It's just so easy to copy stuff now and pass it as your own that people do it all the time, and think just because "everyone does it" that it's okay. And since it's only the big companies that can afford to go after people, offenders don't think twice about swiping your stuff.

Wow, Katherine, that is awful! Have you contacted that person yet? What was their response?
Perhaps you should give us the link and we can all pay them a little "visit."

Katherine,

Really the solution to all this is stop creating such marvelous crafts and posting wonderful pictures!

I have lifted text of my writings all over the internet. It's interesting to find them on foreign blogs...maybe they think we won't find it?

It's more proper to post a link, maybe a summary or small quote and send them to the blog or website. Too many times I've seen lifting of whole pages from other sites with no credit. At least give a link!

Good morning, ladies. I just logged in today and saw all of these messages. Actually, I'm sitting here eating a bowl of cereal (Elizabeth's homemade granola recipe ) and was just taking a bite as I read Theresa's last message. Not a good time to laugh out loud!

I found this woman because I was looking at my referer stats in Typepad and saw a strange site come up once or twice. I went to it and she had copy and pasted all of my Advent ornament pictures onto her blog, but had at least given credit to where she found it. I didn't really like seeing my pictures...I mean, it wasn't like a blog fair where I had submitted something and knew I was contributing. But whatever, at least she linked me.

Then I scrolled around her site and saw my O Antiphon Houses and there was no reference to my blog or where she got the idea or pictures. It was just up as if it was hers and something she was working on. I don't know why she thought she needed to give credit for the ornaments, but not the houses.

I was talking about it to my husband last night and wondered if I'm being prideful. Should I just thank God that someone liked an idea of mine about honoring the saints and living our Faith and give without receiving in return? Should I just feel sorry and pray for a cyber-theif whose loot is images of SAINTS and liturgical crafts?!

I think I'm just spoiled by you guys. Everyone is so gracious, generous, thoughtful and thankful. I think I expected the same from anyone who would be interested in reading my little blog. I can't imagine if the content was some long piece I had written or even the unit study I put together. I'm sure this is a big frustration for those of you who publish articles on line. Thank God it wasn't a picture of my children. I'm glad to hear that hasn't happened to anyone.

As far as contacting the person, my referer stats are on a 24 hour loop, so yesterday's are gone and I didn't bookmark the other site. If I come across her again, I'll have to prayerfully decide what to do.

Katherine,

I am sorry someone used your pictures without your permission.

It made me laugh when you called her a cyber thief who loots images of Saints and liturgical crafts, . I know what she did was wrong but they way you put it was too funny. I had this image in my mind of a mom dressed in cat burglar clothes stealing religous articles in the night.

As for finding the site again, do you have a button on your toolbar for "history"? You should be able to see any sites visited within a certain time frame such as the last 3 weeks, etc. It should be in your internet browser, near the top. In the new IE7 if you click on the favorites "star" it opens a box and the link at the top right is for history. In previous versions it was just a clock with a counterclockwise arrow at the top of the browser window.

Blessings,
Krisann

Okay, this is part of the reason I do not blog. It seems like opening the door of my home to complete strangers. Once I read that child pornographers can take the image of your child and paste it onto other images Is this true? It was enough to scare me away for now.........

Meanwhile I do enjoy the gorgeous blogs of the lovely, less-paranoid, more-brave, and more-trusting families on this list.

I am so sorry Katherine! I think this is a common problem and that no one yet has a solution. I am a little puzzled. Stealing liturgical craft ideas? Isn't that a little hypocritical? My family was VERY concerned about me blogging - which is why I almost never post photos of the kids - I have no answers, only sympathy. If it happens again, I would certainly contact the person.

Hi Katherine,

I got this code from my husband who is a web designer. Here is what he sent me. It works!!!!

This should probably work... Try it out
Just put this code somewhere within your typepad template...

<script language=JavaScript>
var message="";
////////////////
function clickIE() {if (document.all) {(message);return false;}}
function clickNS(e) {if (document.layers||(document.getElementById&&!document.all)) {
if (e.which==2||e.which==3) {(message);return false;}}}
if (document.layers)
{document.captureEvents(Event.MOUSEDOWN);document.onmousedow n=clickNS;}
else{document.onmouseup=clickNS;document.oncontextmenu=click IE;}
document.oncontextmenu=new Function("return false")
// -->
</script>

Ruth, I just put the code in a Typelist and when I go to my own blog I can still right click on the pictures, but on yours I cannot. I was wondering if I can right click on my own because they are already on my computer. Would you please go to my blog and tell me if you can still right click and save them?

Slightly OT, but just to raise a laugh... I used to work for a publisher's, and they sent me to the bookshop one week for training. While there, I learnt that the only section they had CCTV on, because of persistent shop-lifting, was.... the Bibles!

Anyway, this is really horrible for you, Katherine. And I agree with Jennifer about not posting pics of my kids. Much as I would like to show them off the possibility of someone misusing the images is just too horrible.

Katherine, how about disabling right-click? That would mean no one can copy-paste. I did a quick Google search on it, and it looks like there might be an html code for doing that. I'm not sure how involved it is or whether it would be as much of a bother as doing a watermark on every image. Just a thought.
