Am I the only one who cannot nurse and type at the same time? Pillows, slings, it doesn't matter. I can't figure out how to nurse hands free. I've spent a lot of time in the past couple of days wondering if God isn't asking me to just stop writing for a while. I'm reading everything--this board, my email, and all your blogs. But I can't respond to anything.
This is a pretty high maintenance baby even when she isn't sick. She's not one for infant seats or swings and I'm not one for handing off too much (though her siblings love to hold her). I've always been able to have a baby and to write before. I can't figure out why this time is so different...

I've learned to type with one hand. My dh says it's an art. 
Hang in there. I'm beginning to brace myself for life with an infant too. It took us some time to get pregnant and my youngest is already 3, so it's been some time since I cared for an infant. I'm trying to remember the dying to self that goes along with it, though no matter how hard I try to prayerfully and mentally prepare, I know it will come as quite a shock to my currently smooth running system.
You'll have plenty of time to write, but not much time to cuddle and nurse that sweet little bundle. I just love your post with her first smile. She is an angel.

I used that acronym with Rebecca recently. She didn't recognize it so she searched it and came up with Naked at Keyboard. Now, there's an image to go with the modesty threads...

Keep in mind that it's perfectly acceptable to type with no caps when you are nakking. On the nursing mother's sewing list we always will start a post with nak-oht (nursing at keyboard-one handed typing) so others know why you are typing in all lower case and why there may be many typos. 
That being said I will tell you Elizabeth that I do not do well at nakking or ohting. When I am nursing I am mostly just reading.

This probably works better with a bigger, older baby who can steady herself at least bit, but here's what I do:
Cross your legs with the leg on the side you are nursing on on top. Then scooch your top leg up a little higher so that your knee is braced against the edge of the computer desk, your thigh is behind baby's shoulders and baby's bum is on your other (lower) thigh.
Here's a picture of Natalie and I (you probably can't really see what I'm trying to describe, but I think it's a cute picture anyway).

first I make sure the lights are off (i think my baby likes this) i usually put my left shin against the table that the computer is on, i lie my dd on my lap, i put my left arm around her head with my left hand on her left side. her legs just hang. i type with my middle finger. (it takes awhile to type like this, plus she often pulls off to exchange smiles. isn't it cute when they do that?) I can reverse the position when I switch sides.
My dd is a very easy baby though. I wasn't on the computer much with my last dd who was extremely high maintenance. With her, I would lie down in my bed with a book propped up on pillows. As long as I stayed with her she would sleep. As soon as I would get up, she would cry.
Maybe you could try dictating to one of your dc while you nurse in a comfortable position. (Then again, that could be even more frustrating.)

I am also doing a lot of reading and not much writing - I can only manage a little nak-oht in one go! I can snuggle a sleeping baby on my lap and still type two-handed if I put her in the ring sling.

I have the same problem - actually after reading your post on the skirt thread I think we frequently wear the same outfit too! Only you didn't mention white spots on your shoes like I get....
I sit the way Cheryl describes,in the dark too, but I also have my foot up - our computer is on a file cabinet so I pull a drawer out to rest my foot on, but you culd use a footstool. That raises my knee a bit and it helps to keep baby boosted up. But I find myself reading lots and posting little, and when I do post it's not always proper English. I'm finding that while I can type pretty fast with one hand, my brain doesn't really like it. If I really am trying to concentrate and think about what I'm typing I just need to use two hands.
My seven month old is more high maintenance as you put it than my last two before her. I've gotten quite used to it by now, but she sure was a shock at first! Like Katherine said, babyhood is brief so just enjoy!

I can't do it. My babies always want my full attention. I can't hold a book and read either. I try, but there is always a little hand grabbing for whatever I am trying to do. 
Of course, I used to just put Emily, 7 months yesterday!, down, but now she is crawling (already  ) and I can't take my eyes off of her for a minute. So I, too, am doing lots of reading and very little posting. But I wouldn't trade it for the world.

I nak-oht but only if the babe is nursing on the left. I also turn my crossed leg into a "cradle" and they sleep there.
Its very hard.

I'm a one-hander, it's the ONLY way to survive with a nurser, even a 19 mo
I think it's ALL part of THE PLAN, imho

Hmmm, if I had used this when nursing, everything I "typed" would end up interspersed with comments like "Do you want the other side now?", "Are you done?", and "Get your hand OUT!"
