Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I think I am going to start a blog. I actually have it all set up in Blogger which after reading through old threads has me wondering if that is a good idea. Anyway, I had an idea many months ago that I think will be good and I've built the blog sort of around that (the title, etc.). But what I really want to do at this moment is start to tell Grace's vocation story. Things are happening quickly now and instead of filling people's inboxes or my local group's yahoo group emails, I thought I'd just go for the blog and put all my thoughts and feelings there. I am feeling vulnerable, actually, but I think I am ready to do this.

I've got two posts written in draft form and wasn't thinking one way or the other about using my kids' real names. What should I do? It feels funny to write about Grace and not use her name. She's an adult, though. Thoughts?

I think if she is older, you ask her and see what she would prefer.

Real names or not, I can't wait to read about Grace's vocation story!

Yes, since she's an adult, especially, I would do whatever she wanted, and not publish anything about her that she didn't pre-read.

When I blogged I did use pseudonyms for my kids. They came to seem like very real alternate personalities, with quasi-fictional lives of their own. I have a friend who still thinks of my two youngest children as "Helier" and "Crispina," even though she knows them in real life and knew them by their real names long before they had blog names.

My oldest also doesn't blog any more, but when she did keep a blog, through high school and into college, she called herself by the blog name I'd given her -- "Epiphany." Even she felt that that was her alter ego!

Erica

Definitely ask your adult children what they would prefer. They might prefer their names, or perhaps middle, Confirmation names or another.

As my children become adults I ask them what name they would like on my blog, my daughter chose her Confirmation name, my sons couldn't care less.

If I had my time again I would choose their names differently. I would choose names that aren't too babyish or cutesy. Real names even though they wouldn't necessarily be their names. As I suggested middle or Confirmation names.

My daughter used to be Koala, as she reached her late teens it was too babyish. Then I realised cutesy isn't the best either. I met a local lady via blogging and when she realised it was my son serving her in the local fruit and veg store, she nearly introduced herself but didn't, she only knew him as Einstein, imagine the payout of his work collegues, they would have ribbed him indeed.

Then I have an irl friend who lives far away and is always annoyed and confused by our blog names. Though I think I'd still pick blog names for a slight sense of privacy.

Just my thoughts via experience.

Thank you so much for your advice! Very helpful.

I think I am not clever enough to come up with alternative names for my kids especially for the older ones.

Besides the sense of privacy, is there a danger to using real names?

Trying to pray about this.,,

I think so much depends on other factors. I almost never use my real last name on the webs bc it is a unique name. Basicly if you know my last name, I'm the only one in the USA so it can't be too hard to find us, kwim?

But our first names aren't really that unique. Still, I usually use their first initial instead of their name. Or even something else like The Eldest, the Aviator, the Artist or whatever sets them apart from the others at the time.

I would use a different name besides my real first name of Martha, but I lack the creativity to think of a new name for myself.

Erica, I just wanted to check in and ask how the blog plans are going?
I do hope you go for it!

I changed the name from what I originally thought it would be and I wrote a post (the first part of Grace's story). I think I am going to hit 'publish' next week! Ack!

Thanks, Stephanie. :)

Martha, I thought an initial for the minor kids might be a good idea or just vague references like the high school guy or whatever.

A lot is happening with Grace and we are in countdown mode...more later. :)
