Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am going to be upfront by stating that I have a business that sells on Etsy----but I don't want this to be views as a thinly veiled promotion of any kind.

However, I wanted to point you all to a very sad but true reality that Etsy isn't really about being a venue for crafters any more but is only interested in resellers with imports from China that make them tons of money!

This is a great article that really lays it all out: How Etsy Alinated It's Crafters and Lost Its Soul

It's longish but worth it to know what is going on.....

Saddened by this. And I'd say more but we're on our way out, so I hope you guys discuss more.

What I'd like to know more than anything is, if not Etsy, then what? Is there an alternative you guys would recommend? Maybe we could put up our own Catholic Etsy? :) I'm only half-kidding, there might be people here with the know-how and I think there are enough of us that are into handicrafts to put it all together into one place.... but I wouldn't know how to do legal and technical and financial stuff... just throwing out an idea that I'd fully support and help out with, if anyone were to do it.

Stef,
I have dreamed of doing a Catholic Collective that would really allow the Holy Spirit to flourish in all of these great artists. I don't know if anyone has really tried to do this for a Catholic specific venue but there are many smaller venues that are trying to fight to "Goliath" of Etsy. But, it's hard to start something from scratch.

Believe me, I have a small following and it's been difficult to drive traffic to my new website/shopping cart. You almost need to the same sort of "luck" as having a video or blog post go viral PLUS, a great product, marketing and SEO.

Please don't throw out the baby with the bath water. If you know of a good crafter on Etsy don't be afraid to order through there. But, just know when you do a search most of what will come up will be Made In China!

Wow, this is sad, and I had no idea.

Betsy, what is the best way to go about searching for independent crafters not on Etsy.... just do a Google search or try one of the big shopping search engines?

It would be nice if there was a place like CathSwap for Catholic Crafters... maybe a CathShop?
