Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

A mother of a life long friend of mine is my friend on facebook. Last night she posted to the teachers good luck for the school year. Blah blah blah. So I spoke up and I thought, playfully, said what about the families that homeschool.
This is the response I received:
You guys are nuts to take all that on. They could go to school, you could still help educate them and guide them. You could get a job and make money for dental work and college expenses. My kids turned out great and they value their life experiences. You can't shelter them forever.
Just my opinion.

Honestly, I was shocked and didn't know how to respond.
So this is what I said in return:
I am not sheltering them. I am raising them. This is something that the two of us, Kurt and I agreed upon and want. I could certainly do those things, you are correct. But my experiences in school and Heather's were very different. They DO have the option to go to school if that is what they would like. That option has always been there for them. They want to stay with me. And so it is. I love watching them learn. I love the experience. I wasn't putting it down. I hope you did not get that impression.

My big question is, how would you have handled this? I was honestly shocked and felt almost attacked, yet I had opened the can of worms, unknowingly. I had no idea she felt that way.
Warmly,
Jill

That is a tough one, Jill. Just because of my own experiences (my extended family is very anti-homeschooling) I would have just let her comment go- not even asked what about homeschooling families?

I have found that it's not worth my time to debate with people about homeschooling- or even discuss it. Like you, I have been shocked by the negative response it can bring out in people, even people I thought I knew well or would have at least expected to be tolerant.

I think that nonhomeschoolers tend to feel we are judging them- saying that what they are doing (sending kids to school) is not good enough for our own families. In reality, by homeschooling we are just choosing a different path, one that works for us.

Every family has to decide what path to take, and the right one for mine won't be the right one for yours. The paths can certainly change over time.

Like you, I am deeply sad that we can't live and let live, and that some people can turn really nasty about it.

My MO now is to avoid the drama- I don't have time or energy for it, and I am not going to sway anyone's opinion with my words.

Honestly, I had no clue. My family in general is very supportive. A lot of them have homeschooled too. So saying anything, no, I didn't realize it would cause such chaos.
I do need to just keep more to myself I guess.
Thank you.
