Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My boys would each like a locking journal. Something like this one but not so darn expensive!

Specifically, I would like to find something for them that is attractive, has lines, and is not too small. My 10yo wants to start journaling about his prayer life, spiritual reading, etc, so I'm looking for something more grown-up and classic for him. The younger one I think just wants to write about events of the day. I might actually get this one for him, it seems a tad girly to me but still workable. But I thought I'd see if anyone knows of other options. They both definitely want locks for privacy.

Thanks!

A few years ago I picked up journals with locks at Hallmark. Maybe they still have them?

This may be not appeal to you but I thought would suggest using a small box with a lock to put a journal in. I would think you could find one cheaper than $36. If your feeling handy building a box could be a fun project too.

For my older guy I'm hoping to find something more classic and understated since he wants to use it more as a prayer journal. But that would work for the younger one! Thanks!

I will check Hallmark, and see if he's interested in a locking box - I hadn't even thought of that! Thanks for the ideas. If anyone has any further ideas, I'm all ears!

Here is a small lock box, if you aren't up for making one.

And here is another possibility for the younger one if he likes dragons.

Another option might be to buy one with a girlish outside but plain inside and cover it with patterned paper or some sort of other cover of his choice.

Looks like inexpensive plain journals are not common anymore.

Here is a DIY locked journal.

ETA: this method would result in limited pages depending on what size lock you use. (And now I'm picturing 1000 pages with a u-lock. )

I found an Etsy shop that is selling wooden cigar boxes of different sizes. You could decopage a religious picture onto it to cover the cigar label and find a lock to put on it.

I may do this for my kids. My older 2 boys have small boxes that they keep their prayer cards and rosary beads in. They would probably like something a little bigger.

I'm thinking it might be a nice idea as a first communion gift for my younger kids too.

Oh the possibilities....

I looked at the small lock boxes BooksnBabes mentioned in person at Target. They are a bit too small for the size journal my son wants to use (the inside is lined such that the interior is quite a bit smaller than the interior). But while searching Amazon for alternatives, I found (and remembered) these book safes. They are the perfect size for locking up his journal.

Thanks for all the suggestions, ladies!
