Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Nick and I have decided to begin the adoption process. We would like to adopt an infant male internationally. I have no idea where to start this process. Can anyone recommend an agency for us to work with?
Thanks
Jennifer (nervous and excited!)

Jennifer,

Congratulations! You are about to begin a very exciting and rewarding journey---I'm really happy for you.

I highly recommend America World Adoption Assoc.. They are a fairly small, Christian agency, based in Northern Virginia, but they work with families all over the world. We adopted four of our children with their help, all girls, two born in China, two born in Russia. I really believe that God led us to AWAA's door, and they have become like family to us. Maybe you could attend one of their very helpful seminars---they host them throughout the country.

There are a lot of great agencies out there, and some that are not so great. I'm sure others here can recommend ones they've used and liked. It does help to get the insights of those who have gone before you.

If you have any more questions about adoption, please feel free to ask me, either here or by PM. I love to encourage others in welcoming a child into their hearts and homes. May God bless your family.

Jennifer, congratulations on your prayerful discernment of a wonderful addition to your family. I'm not sure of which country you were considering, but if you contact me I can get you some information. I work for a Catholic adoption agency in Kansas.

Infant boys are always available from Guatemala, some just a couple of days old. (It seems most families request girls.) Vietnam is opening back up now and infant boys will be available. For China, the youngest boys would be 6 months at time of referral, and then probably 8-9 months old at time of travel. For Taiwan, there are also more girls requested than boys. Kazakhstan has infant boys available, but the 6 weeks in country requirement makes it hard for most people to adopt from there. Haiti is also an option, and there are so many beautiful children needing a family due to grinding poverty there, but the government is making it take so long with paper processing delays (right, Wendi?)

Our family is blessed with 4 Chinese children and we are big adoption advocates. We'll all be praying for you as you choose your next step. I'm so glad you are asking for a son. It breaks my heart when we send back files on waiting boys from China, for ex, because the girls get snapped up and no one asks for the boys. My son from Hong Kong is the life of any party!

Happy for you,
Mary Alice
