Downton Abby on PBS
I stumbled upon this series over Christmas, and I have watched all the episodes available at PBS... I think I have seen all the first season now.
I can't get over the clothes! They are gorgeous. And, while I don't want to wear a corset, I can't help wish we had at least some of that elegant dressing alive today in our world.
Ripped jeans, tube tops, everything tight and skinny...

You know season II airs this coming Sunday on PBS, right? While we don't get PBS on our on-air TV, I watch it online the following day on the PBS Masterpiece website. My Facebook friends from high school are counting the days and reading To End All Wars to prepare for the viewing. The hardest part for me is waiting a day or so to read their comments on FB as I'm always a bit behind and I hate spoilers.

I love being able to watch it all on line at PBS 
I think all the first season is there until Jan 12.
Also you can watch it through Amazon for free if you are a paid Prime member

Hi Ladies,
I was really enjoying the series...until the big make-out scene between the two guys in episode two I believe....I about died, my poor 13 yo son is sitting there with me as I am trying to fumble with the remote to turn it off.  Does it get into the whole homos*x agenda after that??? It was so, so disappointing. Otherwise, I found it well done. Parents....beware...not for family viewing, at least that one episode.

I know! That about did the series in for me. I had no warning... I was thankful I was watching it without children. They could have easily left that graphic part out. Mercifully it was fairly short.
I debated continuing watching. I would say that story line was for the plot and not part of any agenda per say. I haven't seen anything as objectionable since- though this show definitely has soap opera overtones.

Yes. we were just talking about this the other day at the dinner table -- it just feels like a classier soap opera because of the setting that's all 
that said, WE LOVE IT!!! we turned it off after *that scene* and thought that was it, but i went back that night and checked it out b/c i had seen pro-lifer Eric Scheidler post about it and i thought, there *must* be something redeeming about it if a pro-lifer would watch it! LOL the rest is much, much better, though if you haven't seen the Mr. Pamuk episode be forewarned *it's not for kids*
*and*, as the series goes on, the Mr. Pamuk thing will be relevant, so you might want to evaluate on whether it's something you want to discuss with kids or just skip the whole series. PM me if you want more details, i don't want to reveal spoilers here

I watched it on Netflix after reading a blog post about it and I LOVE IT!!!
I cannot wait until Sunday and I have it DVRed so I can watch it when I can.

I did like the great prolife message that appears later in the show... the characters' excitement and joy. I won't say more - don't want to spoil it for anyone.

I like it but some of it is a bit off for the time period. Like the familiarity of the servants with the masters and even some of the lower servants with the upper servants --just not realistic.
A GREAT show to watch as a side to Downton Abbey is the PBS series Manor House. It's the same time period and goes into detail about what it would have been like then. Very interesting!

Would you guys recommend the old series Upstairs Downstairs? I've been wanting to watch it for a while, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I've heard there are similarities as well.

FYI on Manor house. It's a series that is a "reality show" of sorts. It isn't trashy but there is one part at the end, when they are preparing to leave, that shows a couple in bed together. It doesn't "show" anything but the situation is scandalous.

We have Upstairs, Downstairs. It's a very good series, not for children. There are all the adult subjects that are touched upon in this other series (no graphic scenes, but shocking situations). What made this interesting is the response is always so pro-life and solid, reflecting Catholic ideals. I was frustrated that some of the outfits and materials were a bit 70s in color and fabric -- definitely not keeping in style. But the series does an excellent job on each area keeping to their "place" in the house and society.
Manor House I think I saw. Wasn't that the modern people trying to go back and live in the Manor House? The problem with the show was that modern people didn't want to take on the job of servitude, nor did they understand the idea of hierarchy, even if you are a servant.
We are looking forward to Sunday -- dh and I love these kind of series. But I agree with Michele, that there are some modern interpretations that wouldn't reflect the actual times. I think the point of the series is to show the changing times...but they go too far. I think the main female daughter character is too independent and the family too lenient -- she would be put in her place regardless, I do think.

The daughter is my biggest hang up with the series. I don't particularly like her or sympathize with her. I enjoy the plot lines with the servants better.

All three daughter characters bug me. The oldest for what you mentioned above but also the middle daughter for how quickly and easily she betrays her sister. It makes no sense since in that time it would have also ruined her parents reputation and hers. There isn’t any clear dysfunction between her parents or even with the way they relate to her. It is mentioned but never really shown. The whole bit of all that just seems strange.
The youngest, with her familiarity with the servants, while laudable isn't at all realistic for that time period.

The sisters bug me, too. You nailed it on the second sister. Even if you were plain and unmarriable as the second sister, you wouldn't ruin an older sister's life and family reputation. I think that's a very modern interpretation. Families stuck together and depended on each other, whether they liked each other or not.

You are right. I'd actually forgotten about the middle one. I was horrified by her behavior, but up until her betrayal, I didn't dislike her. I think the oldest bugged me most because I feel like I'm supposed to want her to marry what's his name--and sympathize with his being in love with her--but I actually like him and can't figure why he likes her.
And I can suspend reality for the sake of the show if I LIKE them, and the younger sister is just more likable.
And, yes, Michelle, It bugs me that two otherwise healthy and loving people would have daughters who regularly do such wicked things, though I suppose everyone wouldn't all be on the edge of their seats waiting for the new episodes if thendidn't
It's terrific eye candy, that's for sure
