Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Is there a thread on weight loss? I really need to lose 25lbs and was wondering what everyone else does to stay fit. Time is my biggest obstacle! When do I have time for a good work out? I found these great videos by Leslie Sanson called Walk Away the Pounds and I love them, but in order to get a good fat burning workout in I need about 45 minutes a day! It seems nearly impossible with 7 children. I feel like a terrible witness to my faith and motherhood because of this extra weight.

I feel so much better when I'm fit, I sleep better, I have a better more positive attitude, and I can wear decent clothes, that always seems to make me feel better. It's hard to be beautiful when you just look frumpy. I don't need to be a perfect size 8, but I would settle for a 12, okay, a 14 would even be nice. Anything but an 18!

Does anyone use fitness equipment? Go to a gym? What works? How often do you workout and is it effective for weight loss?

I am in the same boat. My problem is not so much time, although that is a consideration, but energy. I feel run ragged all the time and the last thing I want to do is exercise.
I know exercising gives you energy, but that fact doesn't do much good if I don't have the energy to exercise in the first place, kwim?
Anyway, no help here, but I'm with ya.

That's my other problem, Theresa. I get so tired during the day, exercising is the LAST thing I want to do. Sitting with a cup of tea & a piece of apple pie and a good book or magazine seems so much more calming after a long day with the children...

Maddie,

I find that shorter than 45 minute exercise sessions can work for me, if I keep them fairly intense. Both the FIRM and Taebo have some 30 minute video/DVD workouts that can give me a kick, esp if I put my all into them and use heavier weights. Leslie's videos seem too easy for me - okay for an easy day but not helpful for me for weight loss, iykwim?

Weight loss for me, sadly, is all about working out AND clean eating - I need to do both to see results.

ETA - I have to work out in the morning or I just don't get the time later on in the day. I now do early a.m. workouts.

When son number seven was born, I would workout while the older kids helped youngers with breakfast and the baby was asleep or awake in a swing. Watching mummy workout became like morning cartoons for my then little ones!

I started with three days a week and built from there.

HTH!

Leonie,

I'd love to hear how you eat "clean".

Maddie,
As for working out, I found that if I don't do it first thing in the morning, it won't get done. I walk on the treadmill and do an ab tape by The Firm everyday. I get up at 5:30 a.m. Some days I really don't want to, but I also have arthritis in my lower back so if I don't move on the treadmill....I won't be able to move at all. That's definitely motivating.

Hey, Lisa, another FIRMie.

I admire you for working out with your arthritis - way to go!

I am not super good at clean eating but I am working on it ( ignore the chips I ate for lunch today, please. )

One of the fitness forums I visit has a twelve week rotation for clean eating and I can PM it to you, if you want.

Awhile ago, there was a thread here about WW and posters talked about their great results with that programme.Haven't tried it myself.

My problem with exercise is that is seems so meaningless (as I am doing it). I have a treadmill, and I'll do 20-40 minutes on it, but it is boring. I tried TV (blech!); I tried audio books (better...but it's hard to hear over the noise of the mill); and it is still boring. I'd rather go on a five mile hike, but I don't have time to do that every day.

I agree with MacBeth - exercise is boring. Joining a gym has never worked for me since I've had children. I don't feel like driving there.

I think the thing that helps me the most is being accountable to another person. I used to get up to walk with my neighbors at 5:00 in the morning. I did it regularly because there was no way I was going to stand them up. I can't do it now though because I'm nursing a newborn. I'll have to settle on walking with the kids. If they are on bikes and the baby is in a stroller or carrier, it could be a pretty good work out.

I am planning on doing ab workouts with my dh after I see the midwife for my postpardum check-up. I have not been good at following through with those in the past, so I am hoping he will motivate me to stick with it. He just said the other day, "In a couple of weeks we can start our ab work outs." I said, " Well, ummm, we'll see what they say at my check up....umm...maybe next month." Oh dear!

I have a treadmill in my bedroom, which hasn't gotten any use during this pregnancy but hopefully after she is born...

I love excercise videos, especially Cindy Crawford's postpartum one. She has three different workouts, of differing time and intensity. One is only 12 minutes and consists mostly of stretching. But even that little bit every day (you can do this one in pajamas!) will help trim off fat and keep you flexible.

I would love to do my step aerobics tapes that I have had for years, but there is always a child trying to do it with me, that can get a little dangerous. I had rented a step video years ago by a Christian lady that was a lot of fun and inspiring. I can't for the life of me remember her name.

As far as something like the treadmill seeming boring and pointless while doing it, try taping either an old picture of yourself thin or a picture from a catalog of an outfit you would buy if you reached a certain goal.

As for diet, I am determined to eat what I want! So I had better keep up with the exercise.

I hate to excercise and I love to eat.

Its a disasterous combo but youth worked for me for yrs. too bad I hit 30 and everything skidded to a halt metabolically speaking. Also, we moved to the burbs and we dont have any place to walk to anymore (we used to walk to a movie theatre, several restaurants, our bank, a druggist and etc.)

I am 15 lbs overweight and look it and its depressing but I cant seem to do a thing about it. bleh.

When I walk with the walking videos, it takes 45 minutes and after that I do 100 crunches. Then I need another 10-15 minutes to change and freshen up. I hate it! After a week or so of working out I find I lose an inch or two, which is so motivating! The pill in the pudding is that my schedule can get thrown off at a moments notice and it can stay off for a week or two. Then it's so easy to gain those precious inches all over again.

I am so frustrated, the warmer months will be here shortly and I'm not ready. I love the Jane Austen style dresses but can't wear them because I would look like a peasant woman if I do. Far from the romantic images I envision of myself reading pleasantly to my perfect , well behaved children on the bank of a flowing river.

Sweating is just so gross.

Being married to an Army guy who complains that his washboard abs look flabby is enough to make me get over the fact that I hate to sweat and exercise is boring. However, that only gets me as far as thinking that it's something I should do, not actually get me out of bed.

Here are my 3 tips (after years of being with this fitness trainer want to be ):

1. Have a quantifiable goal. "Lose weight" is not a good enough goal. Weight Watchers starts by saying lose 10% of your overall weight. My new goal is to be able to run (most of) the Army 10 miler in Oct.

2. Try yoga. Yoga is fun and builds your energy and muscle strength without exhausting you. After doing yoga for a month or so, I started walking on the treadmill afterward which killed my yoga instructor. She designed our yoga class to be gentle and relaxing. I use a video now, and the kids fight me for my mat.

3. Take with a grain of salt any advice given by a 9 month pregnant woman eating a bowl of pudding as she tells you how to get in shape!

Molly, I love the Cindy Crawford workouts - great music!

For me, the secret is finding something I lvoe. I own many video workouts - so I have variety - and some of them are plain fun. I forget I am working out!

So I now that treadmill walking deosn't cut it for me - not enough fun.

I'm with ya' girls! We're headed to the beach in less than 2 months and I'm determined not to take these stubborn post-pregnancy pounds with me !!

I'm a used-to-be marathon runner...love the treadmill. Just give me a walkman and some upbeat music! Unfortunately, it's all in the unfinished basement we're now trying to paint AND the best time for me to get my exercise in is 1st thing in the am, but I'm NOT NOT NOT a morning person. Exercise in the morning is just a killer for me. When I WAS running on the t-mill, I'd do it in the afternoons after nap & put one baby in a highchair next to me with snacks and toys, one in the pack n'play on the other side. Worked great! Now 2 babies later, I'm whipped in the afternoons. (I know I need the exercise to give me more energy but a nap just sounds so much better!) I used to take a weekly Jazzercise class in the evenings and loved how much fun it was, but the costs went up this year and it was a 30 min. drive each way (won't complain there...it was heavenly to ride in peace & quiet!! ) Anyway, exercising in the pm took away time from time with dh so it seems that mornings are my target time.

I haven't been able to force myself to start exercising again. I do about 2 very strong, very dedicated weeks and then something happens and I just start making excuses again.

I'm reading Dr. Phil's Ultimate Weight Loss book (kinda funny 'cause I'm not a Dr. Phil fan) but it has been very eye-opening as far as the messages we send ourselves about our weight, personal appearance, etc. I haven't reached the chapter on exercise...sure hope there's some motivating words there!

Good luck everybody. And yeah, I agree, sweating IS gross!

I wonder if we could use this forum to encourage one another in losing weight and eating healthier? Perhaps once a week or every other week we could check in with each other? It would help me be accountable and would be so encouraging! It's so easy for me to slip into apathy , but I sure would be motivated if others were working out and finding clever ways to do it!

Just a thought, I'm game if it's okay to do that here.

I have been reading a great book called Eat To Live by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. A friend suggested I read it to help me lower my cholesterol(which was over 200!). Well I gave it a try(anything not to go on medication) and 7 weeks later my cholesterol dropped 62 points and I lost 20 pounds! -and I'm still losing. I never thought I could do this-well I didn't on my own, only with God's grace.

I changed my eating habits and I walk everyday with my friend. I highly recommend taking a look at it. He has a website www.drfuhrman.com where you can get more info.

I really do feel this is an answer to a prayer and a wonderful gift from our Lord.

Blessings to all for a wonderful Holy Week!

Great work! There is nothing like that feeling of accomplishment when you have struggled and succeeded with weight loss. Keep it up!

Thanks for all the great advice and encouragement I received on this thread last spring. After many starts and stops, I finally got moving and walk at least 8 miles (usually more) a week. Before I give into a chocolate craving I make myself eat something healthy first, then I either reconsider or have a much smaller portion! During the day, I run up and down the stairs as often as possible instead of sending the children off on an errand upstairs for me, and!

I was a size 18 last spring, sigh, and just yesterday, I put on a size 16 skirt that I had been saving for when I shed a few pounds and to my dismay/ delight, it doesn't fit me! It was TOO big! Yippeee, I'm a size 14 again. When I hit a size 12, I plan to go shopping for some new clothes and I can hardly wait! I am sooo motivated. I hardly recognize myself, I thought that girl was long gone. Gosh, it's good to see her again.

Thanks again everyone.
