Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Dd just turned 3 on New Years Eve. To my dismay, I have noticed that she in biting her fingernails, shortening them to little stumps, and gnawing away at the cuticles. This is troubling to me because I am also a nailbiter. Its a nasty habit that I have not been able to kick in my 31 years. Mine started at about 18months of age, according to my mother, when I said goodbye to my pacifier...trading one oral habit for another I guess!

Dd's habit does not seem to be a replacement for another oral habit. She's been weaned from the breast since 14months, and her paci's been gone for a year. Any experience here? Is there a way to stop this habit now, while she's little? (My mom tried everything from bitter nail polish to bribery...with no success!)
Thanks!

Shawna, my 10yo has always been an inveterate nail biter. (I say always, as I never noticed her start!) Last month one of her best friends invited dd to join her for a birthday treat - of all things to a nail salon to have her nails painted and jeweled. Dd took one look at her bitten nail stumps and realised she had two weeks to grow them. She hasn't nibbled a nail since. I know a manicure is not exactly a helpful motivating suggestion for a three year old, but at least I can tell you there is hope . Bribery may work, but it may not. We bribed the same dd to stop thumb sucking. After three months (and payment of the reward!) we thought the habit was broken. She started again.
