We went shopping for kitchen appliances today and I wish you all were with me! does anyone have recommendation for a gas range they love? I think I need to limit it to a 30" range, or we'll have to do some remodelling. While I'd love a Viking, it's a budget blower and it would require some moving of cabinets, etc. So, we're looking at just a "regular" range.

Do you need a cook top or an stove/oven combination?

I'm sorry that I don't have one that I LOVE, but I like it and I know what I'd like :-)

When I replaced our gas stove, I knew I wanted sealed burners for ease of cleaning and a self-cleaning oven (at the time rare in gas ovens - maybe it was longer ago than I think ). Now I wish I had a model with a 5th burner in the middle - I think it is more accomodating for a large pot.

Anyway, I like to go ThatHomeSite and see what people are talking about there. There are discussions about very expensive down to regular options there. .Here's an example.

Also, have you been to the Sears site? They let you narrow by size, type, price, etc. and they have a lot of brands available.

I love looking stuff like this up, so I'll do more for you if you let me know any specifics you have in mind.

I would buy a deep stainless steel double sink. Does it sound like I have an opinion? If you don't have room for the 2 sides of the sink to be a decent size, I'd get just one large basin but still stainless steel. I haven't seen anything hold up like one. My parents just sold there 1963 house and the sink still looked great (after 40+ years and 6 kids!). Actually, when they redid the kitchen a couple of years ago, the designer suggested they KEEP there sink (it was the only original thing when they were done with the upgrade).

Wishing I was going shopping with you two...

I'm still looking too (critical, since I think I killed my Coleman over Christmas) and found this 36" beauty from DeLonghi.

They also have a 24" model, but I don't see a 30" .

How about blue star?

Okay Jen, I'll take you up on that. I went to the message board and then to the Sears site and this is what I came up with
Amana Gas Range with sealed burners

It has the largest oven capacity I've seen in a 30inch range. And I think it looks fine. Where I can loook to see if there are complaints or drawbacks to this particular range.

Check the BTU output of your burners. Should be in the specs.
It does make a big difference in the time needed to boil, especially large pots for cooking and canning.
I have the Promodel Jennair and love it, friends have the smaller one and hate it.
I do not have a digital panel so that saves on repair costs.
Because of the convection oven I did go with the larger one so I could have a regular sized oven. Double check your interior oven dimensions.

Another thing, is there a repair service nearby that can get parts for your appliance? My SIL's beautiful European dishwasher sat unused and unrepaired for years. She joked that it was the reason for moving to another house, not bedrooms, just a chance to have a dishwasher.

The Amana:
High output: one 12,000 BTU
Precise simmer: one 5,000/600 BTU nat.
All-purpose: two 9,200 BTU nat.


The one I have: All-Purpose Burners (4) 9500/850 BTU

Blue Star:
Infinite setting 15,000 BTU Nova top burners (4)

So, is the Amana enough? It's not a Blue Star but how much is enough?

Since I don't have a range, and have been using a tiny camp stove with XXX? btus for a while, I'll let someone else figure it out. How many is enough?

I'd love to boil water in a matter of minutes. Right now, I boil water in the microwave. I like the idea of two ovens so I could use the small one most of the time, but have a larger one if I need it (I currently bake with my toaster oven).

Checked the BTU output of the 30"Jennair--it is 12,000 and the friends who bought it are not happy, expected the same performance as mine, cooking on my stove sent them to the jennair. My 36" has 15,000 BTU. They cook large meals together as an extended family.
That said--
Are you happy with your stove's performance?
Do you need more power?
If you are happy, maybe the 12,000 will be plenty.

MacBeth! That's some oven!   

It would be my DREAM oven for sure, as I LOVE to cook, and watch the Food Network and HGTV more than any others. I watch all the chefs, and long for the day I have TIME to cook really wonderful meals.

Our Tappan just kicked the bucket after 17 years. I think that's pretty good!

We went to Sears and just bought a very simple Kenmore. It is gas, and had four burners, two regular on the left side, one power in the front on the right side (bigger around so it distributes the heat to a bigger area faster), and a simmer burner on the right back.

We wanted the broiler in the oven itself, not a seperate broiler, and a drawer in the bottom (holds the grill pan, broiler pan, and cookie sheets).

It's simple, pretty inexpensive, but does the job. It's been great for us so far!

But if we could afford any one I'd like, MacBeth's above would be IT (or maybe even a bigger professional one)!

That is a concern, especially as appliances are so reliant on technology. I mean, a gas line is a gas line, but the timers, convection thingummies, and all that might be a problem. Good point, Viv.

How come, Tracy? I am just curious...what are the pros and cons of having a separate broiler, or one in the oven? Is it just to have the drawer for storage? Or is it easier to clean?
