Dreaming here...
If you and your family could travel wherever you wanted, would you go by boat or RV?
No work obligations, homeschool on the road or sea, and money wasn't a concern.
RV or boat?

RV!!!!!
We dream of seeing Yosemite, the mountains of California, the desert of Arizona and New Mexico, the autumn leaves in Maine - the entire United States! We have often talked wistfully of what an adventure it would be to spend a year on the road taking in all of the sights and different regions and local cultures and be able to return to our RV at night for meals and family time.
If we're dreamin' - we'd love an RV!

Yep, I'd vote for RV. I love the water and boating, but floating on a boat for a vacation wouldn't be fun. Think cabin fever!

I'd have to say RV too ... first, I can KNIT alot easier on the road than the water (altho, I have knitted on the water, it's just not as much fun!) and I think you could definitely see more of the country by RV. Dh is great with geology, botany, etc so it'd be science and history on the road ... it'd be great!
Altho we do tend to see lots of the country in our little minivan!
ETA: BTW, with an RV you can pull in to a 24-hour Walmart and stock up and rest ... with no charge! We've done it in our van and it is really a great way when you just need to pull off for a bit but don't want to pay for a hotel ... ok, remember, we're on a Catholic teacher salary!

RV.. myself and several children couldn't handle the time on the water.. at least not water you could travel anywhere on.. a small boat on a lake would work fine.. no ocean going here.. I might attempt a huge cruise ship.. but it would have to be a short trip.. just in case

Ugly, ugly seasickness on anything bigger than a fishing boat makes my choice easy. RV!

RV! In fact, I've often dreamed of turning in my 15 passenger for one. Mobile bathroom and kitchen with a fridge and stove, it sure beats going on excursions in a 15 passenger with 10 people....
As for a boat, I would get sick of wearing my life jacket all the time and so would the children.

RV! I love boats but we could see so much more of the country by land than by sea.

Can I pick train? I get carsick and seasick (and have horrible ear issues in planes), but I can read on a train. They have sleeping cars and dining cars. The kids don't have to be in seatbelts, car seats or life jackets. We traveled last summer by train, and though it was expensive, it was by far the most restful and enjoyable way we've made the trek down South to visit my family yet! Too bad we can't afford it now with increased rates, an extra child, the need for a bigger room, etc...

Hmmm...well, I'll bet everyone here will be totally shocked by my responsebut I'd go with a BOAT any day! Some of my reasons -
* I don't like Wal-Mart in my car during the day, why would I want to live there at night in my home?
* You cannot just park an RV anywhere you want anymore, have to stay in RV parks with thousands of other people parked within arms' reach of your home.
* Generators stink and are loud.
* Gas prices stink too.
Pros for a boat (I'm partial to sailboats )
* The world is 75% water.
* Anchor anywhere, or choose marinas and anchorages but they are not crowded. Boats need swing room with the tides.
* Our backyard is prettier and more fun to play in than a parking lot.
* Some people have generators but more have wind generators and solar panels.
* I've never been stuck in a traffic jam with my boat!
* Regarding your homeschool question: Most of humanity has lived a stone's throw from the ocean throughout history so the coastlines are loaded with field trip fodder.
* Maddie, Coast Guard approved life jackets today look like suspenders that only inflate when you hit the water. Very similar to wearing a seat belt in an RV, I suppose, though we are not required to wear them, only to have them aboard.
Well, I'll stop there. I'm out of coffee now anyway. Must go refill...

I'm with you but we got spoiled using trains in Europe that were clean, ontime and relatively inexpensive. We even were able to buy a pass on BritRail that got us back and forth from London to York (well, Harrogate) for less than individual tickets ...
I soooo wish Amtrak was regulated so it would be cheaper! (And I'm a dyed-in-the-wool, hands-off, Republican ... but I do LOVE train travel!)

Very cool!
My father would agree with you, he's a seaman through and through. For his 50th bday he built himself a kayak and kayaked across Lake Michigan.

I love kayaks and canoes, Maddie, your father is too cool! I saw a beautiful wood strip kayak when we were way up in the Boundary Waters area, a guy was selling it in his front yard. I can hardly imagine the time it takes to hand make a boat! He said he loved to build them but didn't care about floating in 'em, so he'd make one every winter and then sell it every summer when the tourists flocked in.
Anyway, that was a bit of a sideline! I like canoes and kayaks and sailboats because they are quiet and can go anywhere, not connected to the next gas station, etc... just the wind or your own muscles.
