Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've mentioned before that I run the blog A Maiden's Wreath. Since most young ladies I know just adore a good romance, I've been writing up and posting some of the sweet love stories I've encountered over the years. I wrote about two of our favorite Catholics authors: Hilaire Belloc, and most recently G.K. Chesterton.

I know of two more pairs that I definitely want to write about in the future: Blessed (!!) Louis and Zelie Martin, and Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly. I'd love to do James Cagney and his wife, but since they were such private people it might be hard to dig up the information.

I have three questions:

Do any of you ladies have any favorite couples, whether in Church history, in film, in literature, or whatnot, whose romance I could write up and share with the readers of the blog? I'd love some suggestions!

One of my favorite couples in history would be Ronald and Nancy Reagan, and their story was certainly beautiful and sweet, but... there's the issue of previous divorce, and I'm not sure how I'd want to handle that on a blog for Catholic girls. Disclaimer? Just avoid those stories? Any opinions?

Last one, which I'm a little hesitant about asking, but have been thinking about for some time... I remember at one of the West Coast Camping trips that Chari so graciously hosts, we girls went around asking the mothers for their 'how-we-met' tales. I just love those stories so much. Would any of you feel comfortable with writing up your stories and sharing with the readers of A Maiden's Wreath?

God bless you all!

I haven't read much myself but from what a friend told me you might find John and Abigail Adams a possibility.

I've always thought that the romance of Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning was something I'd like to know more about. It certainly resulted in some truly beautiful romantic poetry!

Oh, and what about Blessed Karl Josef and his wife? Article

I know they had several children, but I'm not sure how romantic their romance was--though anything involving a royal who was beatified seems terribly "romantic" in some sense, iykwim

How about CS Lewis and his wife Joy? I think Joy was a widow and not divorced - but not sure.

Saint Gianna Beretta Molla and her husband! They had a truly beautiful, faith-filled courtship, and some of their letters from that time have been published.

What about Paul Newman and his wife, Joann Woodward? They were married for so long.

I love the story of C S Lewis and Joy. She was a widow, I am pretty certain.

As far as the Reagans and their previous marriages, I think that it isn't so much of an issue, especially for your target audience. I have explained to my children that many who are not Catholic and do not have the benefit of Catholic teaching, end up divorced not fully understanding the sanctity of marriage. I don't think this invalidates what was a beautiful love story.

Thanks for all your suggestions, ladies! Some of the couples I'm familiar with (and I'm doing the classic smacking forehead and why didn't I think of that thing), and others I'm excited to research.

And, Molly, thanks for the input about the divorce issue. The Reagan story is such a beautiful one, and I would be sorry not to share of it.

I believe that J.R.R. Tolkien and his wife had a very beautiful romance and marriage. I seem to recall something about her dancing for him in the woods, and being the inspiration for Luthien Tinuviel. I'm not sure how much is on record, though.

Her gravestone reads "Luthien." His says "Beren." In his letters, he referred to her often and tenderly, and her death (in old age) devastated him. There are some lovely photos of them looking like lovebirds late in their life together, if you go delving.

Joy Gresham Lewis, C.S. Lewis's wife, was divorced, not widowed, at least when they met. He married her initially simply so that she could stay in England legally, and then later actually fell in love with her, when she was already ill, and the marriage was blessed by the (Anglican) church. At the time, the Church of England did not permit remarriage by divorced people in church (or via the church) without something like an annulment.

What about St Elizabeth of Hungary and Louis.
