Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Taking Note of Change by Elizabeth Foss. Thanks, Elizabeth.

This article made me think of when I was pregnant for the first time with my now 15 yo dd. I worked full-time as a public administrator for a large woman's shelter provider. I remember expecting my pregnancy to not affect me...think about that...pregnancy to not affect me! My culture told me that professional life just moved forward in a very linear upward and onward way. At the end of my pregnancy, I would have a baby and within 6 weeks I would be back on track. I clearly remember feeling incredibly alone...was I the only woman who felt affected by pregnancy...the only woman who wanted to slow down...the only woman who couldn't snap back in 6 weeks? Now I just scratch my head and wonder how I could ever have underestimated the life-altering change that motherhood would bring to me.

"Taking Note of Change" helps me to see that I still have room for improvement in the area of correctly estimating the impact of change in my life and the lives of others. I want to become more sensitive, especially when a lot of change is happening all at once. Woman can be so vulnerable during these multi-change times. Tenderness, sympathy, hands-on help, patience, and encouragement can help.

Love,

...Or how about when the oldest child moves fully into teenager-hood and the entire family dynamic changes?

I've been trying to voice my own fears and emotions about this to a girlfriend or two IRL and I get the blank-est stares. I realize its his life that is changing, but my life has changed radically as a result, and I have spent more than my fair share of time pondering, crying (keeping in mind I'm also 3rd trimester hormonal!), and worrying over it. A girlfriend who understands these things would be such a comfort. I cannot even imagine what it will be like when a child leaves home, given how life altering moving into the high school realm has been.

A great article, and a great reminder to be sensitive to those who are walking a few feet behind us (with youngers) and to look up to those walking a few steps in front of us (those with olders).
