I know this is very similar to the question about preemies just a few posts down, but I was hoping someone has had a similar experience and could comment on this.

A friend of mine gave birth five days ago to her fourth child. When he was discharged from the hospital the doctor was concerned about the amount of weight that he had lost, and now at five days, his weight has dropped about 20%. He was in the eight pound range at birth, now he's in the six pound range. She's been having trouble nursing him, and they're going to start supplementing with formula to try and get his weigh up.

Has anyone else gone through something like this? If you have any suggestions/advice/encouragement I can pass along to her, I'd really appreciate it. Any prayers would of course be greatly appreciated, too-- this plus very little sleep while taking care of three more ages five and under is really taking its toll on her.

My son dropped from just over nine pounds to the upper sevens in four days. He was dehydrated and needed IV fluids to where he had enough energy to eat. Is the baby making enough wet diapers? Dehydration is my first concern, but I'm sure she's aware of that...

Does she has access to a lactation consultant or a La Leche group? I wonder if the nursing troubles are a latching problem that could be rectified with a little help.

I second consulting a lactation consultant or La Leche League. My dd12 lost weight as a newborn, we hired a lactation consultant and she cleared up the problem right away.
