Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was just wondering how many blogs do you all manage to visit on a regular/semi-regular basis? If time was available I would visit you all however there are only 24 hours in the day, bit short that so we can't make the rounds of all. How do you manage your blog reading?

I have two blogs that I manage to read approximately every couple of days, then I have another three that I try to get to once a week. I also have a couple of other favourites that I manage to only get once every month or so. Then to try to get to know other bloggers I try to randomly select a new 4 real blogger once a fortnight or so and 'drop in for a visit.' I try to keep my blogging time under half and hour a day, sometimes it is less. I only visit 4 real blogs because I don't have time for anyone else you are all so busy blogging I can't keep up with you all here

Love to know if anyone has a great system on visiting.

I use Bloglines. I've got over 40 blogs I'm subscribed to, but Bloglines does all the work. Only a handful post everyday so I don't spend all my time looking for new entries.

I have currently 81 on my bloglines and many of them are daily reads. Problem with that many is that I can't comment as much as I would like. (And sometimes I have technical issues with certain blogs that I just can't seem to comment on sometimes, like Margaret in MN and Lilting House.)
I probably spend an hour or so at night after the kids go to bed. Sometimes in the am before they get up or while they have breakfast. Lunch break is often spent here.
Now that dh is gone to Alaska I find myself staying up late at night reading blogs and chatting here. I hate going to bed without him.
And now that school has dwindled to a close I am here more during the day (like now ).

I have countless blogs on my Google Reader, but I made a separate folder for the ones I visit regularly -- mostly very old friends I've known online for years.

Then I have various folders for various topics -- like Real Learning, or Special Needs, or Catholic, or Recently Added, or Unschooling (obviously, the categories overlap)

I pick a category according to what I am researching or which category I haven't visited for a while. Right now, I am mostly interested in organizing so I spend the most time on my Organizing and Simplicity folder.

I spend about 15 to 20 minutes a day reading blogs, and once a week or so I devote a fun two hours to reading.

I write much more often than that -- I probably spend 30 to 45 a day writing.   Partly because I write so much more slowly than I read, but also because I have this family archiving gene -- I seem to be compelled to write in order to think and remember.

I have a handful that I get the feed from, so it is in my inbox. I rarely visit any, unless I really feel compelled to comment.

From time to time, I will visit others from 4Real, but I don't even try to keep up with them on a daily basis.

What is bloglines exactly and how do you subscribe?

I look at the blog I contribute to every few days. Other than that I almost never read them. I find the conversations here work better for me. It's hard to know that I'm missing lots of good ideas, but I have to put my time where I can get the most out of it. This forum feeds me the way I need to be fed.

Bloglines is what is called a "feed reader." It acts like a mailbox, gathering all the blogs you subscribe to in one place for you to read. The blogs that have a new post are in bold, with the number of new posts in parentheses.

Bloglines

or you might like Google Reader, too. Google Reader

To subscribe to a blog, both readers have a button to add to your browser's toolbar. Just click it and it will look for the feeds, then choose the one you want, click subscribe. That's it. Or, when you find a blog you like, look in their sidebar for a link to their feed. Click it and you'll see a webpage that looks like nothing but html code. Copy the address from your browser -it'll look something like www.coolnewblog.com/RSS=2, then go to your feed reader, look for a "subscribe" link, paste that address where it says something like "feed URL"...then subscribe, etc. It's very easy and you can find all the how-to you need on the feed reader's site.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Erin, I used to use the blogroll on my own site and hit every blog there. Usually I could tell quickly if there was a new post.

Lately I've had to scale way back on my computer time, so I use Bloglines and see what blogs have new posts. I often read the posts there, but don't always have the time to go to that blog and leave a comment. Wish I could, but I had to find a better balance.

That's a good question. I don't know of a way to subscribe to a big number of blogs at once. I think you will have to visit each one and subscribe one at a time. Maybe someone knows a better way...

You can import someone else's Bloglines subscriptions. They must export it by saving as an OMPL file (Bloglines has instructions to walk you through that) and then you import the file into your account. The only hitch is that you'll get ALL their subscriptions. You can go through and unsub from those you don't want, of course.

I'd offer you my file but I share an account with my hubby and I doubt anyone here would want the looooong list of political blogs he reads! Besides, I've now moved most of my 4Real friends to Google Reader. Can you export/import a Google Reader blogroll? Worth looking into...

Yup! Same way - they have a link somewhere to import/export as an OPML.
