Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Dh is going to the US tomorrow but the good side is that he can buy some nice cheap clothes for everyone . Trouble is, I'm befuddled by US clothing sizes.

DD is 6 (7 in September) and quite tall and skinny for her age. I've looked at some sites which suggest that she would be size 6-6X in US sizes but I can't really believe that. Can someone help me out?

Ds is just 5, also quite tall for his age. Would he really be a size 4?

It's very counterintuitive because here we go by upper age so I'd buy age 6 for ds, age 7 for dd.

Help!

I would say get the 7 for dd. (I don't have experience with clothing for sons, but I would guess go with a 5 or 6 for your son.)

Maybe you could give dh their measurements. My dd worked at an outlet Gap (saying that it wasn't the more upscale store) and she would routinely help foreign men shop for their whole family with a piece of paper listing measurements...just a thought
If not, I would go with the upper size and look for the adjustable waistband for the boys.

I'd go with at least a 7 for dd and 6 for ds. Rather they are too big than small. They can always grow into them.

My 10 yo boy is wearing M (size 8) in basic shirts that are like nice t-shirts. We are very short and not real thin. Again some of the pants are made to be baggy - problem for thin boys trying to wear sharp looking pants that actually fit at the waist and don't fall off (different clothing problem for boys than for girls ) Most of the pants fall off of my boys if you get them at inexpensive places. so for pants we buy small unless we are looking at upscale labels/places getting dress pants (works because they are short - not sure what the solution is for tall). The trouble here is the size depends on whether you are buying upscale brands or Wal-Mart brands. Upscale tends to run smaller. Others, you go larger. I think I'd send my dh with measurements - waist, height and then convince him to actually ask for help at least the first time (then he can kind of use what he has bought before to size up what else he wants to buy). I know, we're nutty, no major standardization. It is a great marketing tool for getting you in the store browsing since you just have to see it.

As for girls - good luck! We've had our best buys at thrift stores. With girls you want to go bigger (especially if they are tall because stuff is soooo tight and short). My petite (short and thin) dd got away with 16 W in the girls department for a long time to avoid the juniors (I think she was about 15 yo when we had to switch over in jeans, a little sooner in dresses)

My 3 year old son wears a size 4 regular or a 5 in toddlers. He is almost 40 inches (102 cm) tall.

My 9 year old son is 55 inches (140 cm) tall and weighs 65 pounds (29.5 kg). He wears a size 10 slim in pants and size 10/12 in shirts. He is very thin! I like to give him some growing room in his shirts, but they aren't too huge.

Miss Almost 8 is 50 inches (127 cm) tall and weighs 64 pounds (29kg). She wears mostly size 8 in girls dresses but I buy 10s for growing room in shirts. I don't like the super snug styles.

My 7 1/2 yr. old daughter is 46.5 inches (118 cm) and weighs 60 pounds (27kg). She grew out of the 6X size a while ago and now wears 7/8. When in doubt, I get the 8.

Hope this helps!

Elizabeth, now that this is too late -- the best thing for dh is to go with measurements .... my rather leggy 7 yod is in 5T shorts cuz she's so darn skinny and my 8 yos is wearing 5T swim trunks ... US sizes have NOTHING to do with age (ok, maybe a bit) and all to do with measurments.....

When we were in Austria, the European sizes were sooooo much easier (and standard!)

And it isn't just children's clothes. I have clothes in several different sizes that fit/don't fit with no rhyme or reason. It would be so nce to be able to order clothes from the internet knowing they will fit when they arrive. Shopping for clothes is such a major pain with kids in tow, but how else will you know if they fit? Sure can't go by size!
