Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My New Years resolution was to start making yeast free sourdough bread - well I have not started yet, but it is only April!

Does anyone have any tips about where I can get a good starter, recipes, crock etc?

Also - for those of you who make your own - do you do it all by hand - is it doable? I do not have any Kitchen Aid or Bosch or anything for mixing dough. Does anyone recommend any of these.

Thanks for any advice.

There was an awesome looking recipe from the "Our Lady of Good Remedy" on yahoo that I always wanted to try. I will hop over and look for it.

I use a glass cookie jar that I got at the after-Christmas sale for $2. My starter is part rye flour, water, and part whole wheat. I'll give you the recipe when I get home but it's from Peter Reinhart's The Bread Baker's Apprentice. You can also request Carl's 1847 (free).

Also, just FYI, sourdough bread still has yeast -- it's just WILD yeast, so some people say it's friendlier to those with sensitive systems because it's already what you're used to having around you. I don't know if you're trying to avoid yeast completely or just want a natural starter.

I'd recommend having a mixer, just because it's more convenient and a time-saver, but yes, it's completely doable by hand.

I make it by hand, I have a mixer, but there is something very wonderful about kneading your bread for your family. There are many start recipes avaiable, you can even try and "catch" your own wild yeast. Great science experiment for the dc!!!!   Just be sure to watch it closely.
