Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm really struggling to instill this in my children. My oldest (10 1/2), in particular, will do the bare minimum to get by. He was complaining today that Fridays are his worst day. I told him that I had tried to schedule Fridays as a light day, and asked what wasn't working for him.

In his grouchiest, growliest tone -

"Well, I have to do grammer AND dictation in the SAME DAY and I also have to do a WRITTEN NARRATION and that takes me about 10 minutes".

(With emphasis on how long 10 minutes is).

Sometimes I am just at a loss. He gets distracted very easily (I can't blame him, we have a busy house). He'll do a little reading and then the next thing I know he'll be sword-fighting with his brother, or reading a magazine, or grabbing a Kindle to play Scrabble).

Our only "schedule" persay, is that we meet on the couch at 9:30 for morning basket time. We do our morning devotion, history readings, memory work, etc. The rest of the morning I try to encourage him to work on his school work so the he can have it done by noon. I either have to nag him the whole time or he'll take the whole day about it....doing the least he possibly can.

He's a very bright kid, and I try to challenge him without frustrating him. This is our first year, so at this time I'm only expecting one written narration a week, one dictation passage a week, etc. I feel like I've hardly been overwhelming him.

Ugh. I threatened him this week that if I heard any more complaining we would have a typical public school day at home - 8:30 to 3:00. (Again he did skated through without putting a lot of effort into his attitude).

Suggestions???

My 9 1/2 is like that to an extent..constantly whining and complaining about her work, acting like a 10-minute spelling lesson is a 10-hour spelling lesson. She is also easily distracted (I suspect some mild ADD).

However, she knows that there will be absolutely no computer, television, or playtime until all of her schoolwork is done. And if she wastes my time by lollygagging and whining then she is really wasting her own time.
