Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has this been discussed before?

I have the old-fashioned guillotine paper trimmer, which has served me well over the years. I must admit I'm a little squeamish having it around my kids.

I am in need of something sharper, and experienced a rotary cutter at the Montessori school which I just loved for the safety feature.

I need something that can handle 12 inches or more, like my current cutter.

Any recommendations? Any warnings? Preferences?

About 10 years ago, I held my breath and purchased the Fiskars Classic Rotary Trimmer. I *think* I purchased it at Michael's with a 40% off coupon?? But I can't remember now. It has been one of the best investments I've made.

I can replace the cutting bar, and after 10 years, mine is about due. I can replace the rotary cutting blades when they become dull, and I have done this once. The size of the classic trimmer is quite generous which allows me to trim larger pieces of paper, like a 12 x 12 sheet of scrapbook paper trimmed down to fit in a notebook. There are graduations along both sides for measured and accurate cutting and I use these every time I cut. A bar folds down to hold a piece of paper in place while you slide the rotary blade across an edge - this results in a clean, even, cut every time, without any paper sliding, which sometimes resulted when I used my guillotine cutter. I also like that I can trim laminated papers - even thick laminate.

I highly recommend this trimmer, in spite of its cost. It offers a good, precise cut every time.

Just don't get the Staples brand trimmer. It lasted a year.

I have a large rotary and this "slidey" one, and I much prefer my slidey one even though, in theory, it can't do as many pages at once. I still pull out the big one for bigger projects, but I don't find it as intuitive in making precise cuts.

Dh just brought home an old, small one with the arm from work that he intends to repair, and I must admit that I'm looking forward to it. I wouldn't want little ones using it, but it is what I always used in school, and I prefer it to the modern "fancy" kinds. My boys, however, do LOVE using the slidey fiskars one, and it is very light and in more easily portable and stores much more easily that the whopping rotary.
